The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 40

Chapter 40

What made Hayley even happier about taking in the army dogs was that she earned another 150 points for it. That meant she hadn’t just broken even-she had actually made a profit!

She immediately opened up the system’s store panel. This time, she carefully scrolled through everything she could redeem.

The food section now had ten options. It started with simple energy bars and went all the way up to a supercharged energy drink that cost 100 points. All of them were designed to quickly restore stamina, lasting anywhere from a few hours to a few days.

Hayley wasn’t worried about food, so she flipped over to the medicine tab, which now had two new items.

Along with the 20-point instant blood-stopper Valenex, there was also a “super bandage” for 50 points, and an emergency pill for 100 points.

She tapped on them to check the details.

[Super Bandage: Apply to any wound for rapid healing, even arteries!]

“Whoa,” Hayley whispered. “So if your neck gets cut, you could just slap this on and be fine!”

The emergency pill surprised her even more.

[Emergency Pill: Revives a person as long as they are still breathing!]

“Damn,” she muttered, impressed. “These things are seriously amazing.”

But what she saw next nearly made her eyes pop.

[Zombie Virus Inhibitor-100 million points!]

“There’s actually an inhibitor? The zombie virus can be cured?!” she shouted in disbelief.

However, her excitement died down the moment she noticed the price tag. One hundred million points.

Yeah, no thanks. With her pitiful 156 points, she wasn’t even close.

Still, Hayley’s eyes gleamed. If the store carried something that powerful, just imagine the chaos if it ever got out. That was a game-changer for the entire world.

She rubbed her palms together, scheming.

A hundred million points. No matter what, she had to save up enough to buy at least one dose someday.

After finishing with the medicine, she clicked into the weapons tab and instantly started drooling.

Even a basic P5 handgun cost 500 points, while a Glock was 1,000. Submachine guns ánd shotguns started at 5,000, and the AK she had her eye on was listed at 8,000.

Weapons from the system weren’t ordinary. They were at least a tier stronger than anything out there. Their power and damage were off the charts.

The prices were steep, but Hayley couldn’t get that AK out of her mind. She quietly tossed it into her cart, determined to save enough for a good weapon someday.

At the very bottom of the store was a locked tab. A message said she needed at least 5,000 points to unlock it. Who knew what other treasures were hidden inside?

This store was way too perfect for her tastes. She wanted everything. The problem was, she had no points.

It was torture.

So, she checked the “How to Earn Points” menu. Three options appeared before her: complete system missions, expand her territory, or add new members to her territory.

Hayley quickly connected the dots. The points she had earned before from killing invaders came from completing a base defense mission. The 15 dogs she had just taken in counted as new members.

She focused on the last one-expanding territory

That was it. Starting tomorrow, she would begin pushing her borders outward.

Chapter 41

The very next morning, instead of running the border of her current territory, Hayley headed straight for the back mountain.

As she ran, her dogs carried ropes in their mouths to help her mark the boundaries.

In the old days, people staked claims by racing horses across land. Now, it was Hayley and her dogs doing it.

She sent Summer off with Ace, Spade, Diamond, King, Club, Jack, Flush, and Straight to start from the left. Meanwhile, she led East, South, West, North, Heart, Joker, and Front Legs from the right.

Those were the names she had given her newest pack members.

Splitting into two groups, they ran in opposite directions, circling the mountain with ropes as they went.

By afternoon, Hayley and Summer met in the middle. Hayley tied the two ropes together, then worked her way around, knotting each section into a continuous loop.
