“Call me Your Highness. I like the sound of it,” Hayley replied.
Nathaniel stared at her, completely at a loss for words.
Soon, Hayley packed up and led everyone out.
Nathaniel escorted them to the bunker entrance but didn’t follow them outside. He seemed to dislike the sunlight.
“I’m glad we got to meet,” he said. “We should stay in touch from now on.”
“Sure,” Hayley said, waving back at him. “Next time your base collapses, I’ll give you a discount
Nathaniel paused, clearly not sure how to respond.
Hayley had a real talent for killing conversations on the spot.
And somehow, he didn’t mind it.
He smiled and waved at her. “Goodbye, my friends.”
This time, Hayley’s group took the internal elevator straight up to the top of the bunker.
The sunset washed over them. The blood–red sun sank into the far western plains. The green grass reflected deep crimson light, stretching endlessly across the land.
None of them had realized they had been fighting for an entire day. Once inside the bunker, time had stopped meaning anything.
They boarded the helicopters and prepared to leave.
That was when four figures burst out of the bunker entrance and ran up the stairs after them.
“Wait!”
“Please wait!”
Hayley recognized the voices and turned around.
It was Gideon, Shana, Stephen, and Lydia. The four people who had survived everything.
“What’s up?” Hayley stopped.
“Can you take us with you?” Stephen asked.
“We want to go with you,” Lydia said, her gaze steady.
After facing life and death, they had finally seen Ark One for what it was.
They knew the outside world was crawling with zombies. They knew it was hell out there.
Ark One had always told them the outside was a wasteland, with nothing but zombies and ruin, not a single living
soul.
Any small bases that survived were supposedly barely hanging on, drowning in zombie swarms.
They had been told they had no choice but to stay.
Now, they understood.

Even if the world outside was hell, it was still better than Ark One. Ark One was the real monster, the place that crushed every last trace of humanity.
Hayley looked at the four ordinary people in front of her and lifted her hand. “Get on.”
Stephen and Lydia lit up instantly and climbed aboard.
Shana grabbed Gideon’s hand happily and started up the steps.
But Gideon stopped.
He stood still, looking at Shana’s back. “You go. I’m not coming.”
Shana froze. “You’re not?”
“I’m staying,” Gideon said quietly.
Stephen stopped halfway up the helicopter steps. “Why?”
“There’s something I still need to do,” Gideon said, waving him off. “You all go.
There was a rising light in his eyes, like the sun just breaking over the horizon.
