The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 492

Chapter 492

Another full year passed before the steel wall was finally forged into existence.

Milo had watched it all happen, step by step.

From the days when they were running for their lives, chased by zombies and scraping together supplies just to

survive

To this very moment, when Hayley had carved out solid ground inside zombie territory, built a league city, and stood toetotoe with the endless waves of evolving monsters.

The more Milo thought about it, the hotter his blood ran.

They had caught the best possible window, right before the zombies fully evolved. They had flipped the balance back in humanity’s favor.

If Hayley hadn’t gone all in back then, Milo could picture the outcome all too clearly.

Scattered little bases, one after another, would be swallowed by neverending zombie tides. Those bases had no supplies, no production, and nothing to fall back on. They would have crumbled under wave after wave of attacks.

As the zombies kept evolving and resources dried up, humans would have been worn down bit by bit until nothing was left.

Forget other people’s bases. Even his own Firebrand Base wouldn’t have lasted long.

They were dirt poor, overcrowded, and stuck in some remote, barren stretch of land where nothing would grow. The residents had no vehicles, no way to follow him out to fight zombies. If they tried, they would just be walking to their deaths.

Trapped like that, Milo honestly had no idea what the future would’ve looked like.

Luckily, he had met Hayley.

She took on the burden of feeding his people and solved his biggest problem. That was what let him throw everything he had into the city recapture effort alongside her.

They had hacked a road straight out of a dead end.

Milo watched the helicopter carrying Hayley shrink into the distance, the grin on his face growing wider by the second.

That girl was something else.

After finishing her inspection, Hayley didn’t head back to the city. She went straight home to her shelter.

Woof, woof, woof!

Woof, woof!

Woof!

The moment she stepped inside, the dogs came charging out, bouncing off her legs and trying to climb up her.

I’m back.

Woof, woof, woof!

Woof!

Summer slammed into her arms with full force.

Hayley laughed and rubbed Summer’s head hard. I’m back, Summer.

Woof, woof, woof!

Holding Summer, Hayley walked deeper into the shelter, surrounded by wagging tails and excited bodies.

She had been way too busy lately and had neglected the dogs badly.

Now that she was stronger, she didn’t need them charging into fights for her anymore. If any of them got hurt, it would tear her apart.

These days, the dogsjob was guarding the shelter and the nearby residential area. With them around, her home base was rock solid.

Woof, woof, woof!

Even after she sat down, Summer kept barking at her nonstop.

Hayley knew exactly what he wanted. I’ll spend more time with you from now on.

Woof, woof, woof!

Woof, woof, woof!

And all of you, too. I won’t leave anyone out.
