“I already turned him down the same way,” Samuel said, “but he told me that if you didn’t go, he’d come all the way here and look for you himself.”

Hayley went quiet for a moment, genuinely at a loss for words.

“Where exactly is he inviting me to?” she asked.

“Ark Two. He says they’re holding an auction there and wants to take you out to broaden your horizons.”

Hayley was silent again.

“Nathaniel’s invited you several times over the past few months,” Samuel continued. “I turned him down for you every time. If he hadn’t been dead set on coming here himself this time unless he got a yes, I would’ve rejected him again. I just think it’s too early to show the league to outsiders.”

After listening, Hayley took a deep breath.

“Tell him this. I’ll go, but I’m bringing a lot of people with me. He’s covering everything. Travel, lodging, meals, everything. Not just for me, but for everyone I bring. If we’re treated even a little badly, I’m turning around and coming straight back.”

“Got it.”

Half an hour later, Samuel got a reply.

Nathaniel agreed to every condition without hesitation. He promised to take care of Hayley and everyone traveling with her. The accommodations would be top–tier, the arrangements flawless.

He guaranteed she would have a good time.

After hearing all that, Hayley lowered her gaze to the dogs clustered around her feet. Smiling, she said, “Well, someone’s treating us to a trip. Let’s go!”

Hayley boarded the aircraft with the dogs and Griffin. Everyone else stayed behind at the league.

Once again, the helicopter lifted off, heading toward Ark One. Several hours later, Hayley spotted the familiar bunker below.

This time, it was glowing. It stood out like a beacon in the middle of the dark grasslands. On the landing pad atop the bunker, a man stood waiting with several others beside him.

Nathaniel watched as the helicopter rattled closer, a slow smile spreading across his face.
