The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 546

Chapter 546

Every level of the base had been sealed off. It stopped people from moving around, but it also trapped the zombies on each floor.

Above Level Three, armed base guards held the lines. These were trained fighters, and they blocked the infection at the source. A lot of people died, but the situation was finally brought under control.

Level Two got hit the hardest. By the time they cleared it out, more than half the workers were dead or injured.

This time, Ark Three took a massive loss.

A helicopter hovered outside the Level Five windows. A rope ladder dropped onto an open terrace as Ark Two scrambled to evacuate, hauling their wounded aboard in a panic.

Once Ark Two pulled out, Nathaniel, Hayley, and the rest walked out calmly, unhurried.

Before they left, Woody handed Hayley a communicator and added her to their channel to ease future communication.

We didn’t really understand Base K1 before,he said with an easy smile. Turns out outside bases aren’t weak at all. Stay in touch.

Hayley took the device. Sure.

If I get the chance, I’ll visit Base K1 in person.

No rush,Hayley said. You’ve got your own mess to clean up first.

Woody laughed and nodded, watching her group depart.

Before this, none of the three bases had taken Base K1 seriously.

After tonight, that changed. Only now did they realize that out in the wasteland, a force worth noticing had quietly emerged.

All three bases were curious about Hayley, this sudden dark horse. They were watching. Weighing.

Still, none of them saw Base K1 as a real threat yet.

No matter how big an outside base got, they believed it couldn’t surpass them.

They had no idea how wrong that assumption was.

Hayley wasn’t building a base. She was building a league.

Seated in the helicopter, Hayley reviewed the situation. She hadn’t even started making real moves yet, and the three major bases had already taken a serious hit.

Ark One lost nearly half its people during that Hearthfall disaster.

Ark Two’s inhibitor scheme wiped out its upper leadership and research division. Personnel losses were lighter, but the damage was structural.

Ark Three got dragged down by the fake inhibitor. Their base director and deputy were dead, the lower levels were decimated, and they had burned through half their stockpile buying that junk.

It felt like the universe was handing Hayley opportunities on a silver platter.

Relations between the three bases had dropped to rock bottom. Ark Two and Ark Three, especially, were one bad look away from open conflict.

She needed to keep weakening them before they officially decided she was an enemy. By the time they figured it out, she intended to be stronger than all of them combined.

As she was thinking, she felt someone staring straight at her.

What are you looking at?she asked.
