The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 552

Johnsonbough High was one of the most wellknown private schools in the Eastern Region.

Middle school and high school shared the same campus.

The buildings were beautiful, straight out of a teen drama.

Covered walkways layered over each other, linking classroom buildings together in neat rows. Outside stoo gym, a music hall, even a domed observatory.

Students here used to pick up every hobby you could imagine.

Now, their only interest was eating people.

Raarh!

A wave of student zombies poured out of the school.

Under the pale daylight, they ran with the restless energy of teenagers; arms pumping, legs flying, and gray lit with wild excitement.

The fastest one looked like it had been on the track team. It wore a black headband with some random words stretched across its forehead, light athletic clothes, and kneehigh sports socks.

It must’ve died horribly.

Half its face was gone. From its left eye down across its cheek, something had torn the flesh clean off. What remained was a dark, swollen crater of rotten meat, fermented through years of decay. The skin around it had shrunk tight from decomposition, stretched thin as if it might split at any second.

And yet, the injuries didn’t slow it down at all. It broke ahead of the others and charged straight at Hayley.

At about 15 feet out, it swung its arms high, bent both knees, and launched itself forward.

Bang!

The windshield shook as the zombie slammed against it.

Its body was stuck there, face mashed flat against the glass. It opened its driedout mouth wide and started gnawing at the windshield, as if it could chew through it.

Its teeth scraped across the surface with a shrill, grating sound that crawled under the skin.

Raarh! Raarh! Raarh!

Bang!

Just as it was really getting into it, the wiper blade snapped upward like a metal arm. it hooked it and flung it off the glass.

Below, the spinning steel teeth of the loader churned at full speed. The zombie dropped straight into it and was gone in a second.

Boom!

Hayley floored the gas. The zombie harvester roared, deep and powerful, barreling straight toward the campus.

Raarh!

1/2

Raarh! Raarh!

The entire school came alive. Zombies rushed out from every direction.

However many stood in her way, Hayley shredded. Numbers ticked through her mind.

[Six thousand three hundred and one]

[Six thousand four hundred and eightytwo]

[Six thousand five hundred and ninety]

[Six thousand eight hundred and eighty]

[Seven thousand and thirty]

+15

[Eight thousand nine hundred and fifty]

By the time Hayley had cleared most of the grounds outside the academic buildings, she was closing in on nine thousand.
