Chapter 57
Leonard didn’t make a sound the whole time. Even when Hayley peeled off his blood–soaked clothes and cut away the dead flesh stuck to his wounds, he stayed silent.
There was no way it didn’t hurt.
The tearing of skin and muscle sent fire straight through his nerves, the kind of pain that made most people go numb.
But not him. He refused to let out even a single groan.
Tough guys didn’t cry out.
He gritted his teeth and bore it, but when Hayley finally finished cleaning the wound and sprinkled white powder into the raw flesh, something incredible happened.
A wave of coolness shot straight through his pain–numbed nerves.
He stared at her in disbelief. With just a little of that powder, the agony vanished. Warmth followed, wrapping around his wound with a soothing comfort he had never felt before.
By the time she finished bandaging him, Leonard almost felt like his wounds were halfway healed already. He looked at Hayley, stunned.
“Alright, stop staring at me like that,” Hayley said. “Go grab a wet towel from the bathroom, wipe down your body without touching the bandages, and change into clean clothes.”
She tossed him a fresh combat uniform.
Leonard held the towel and clothes in his hands, emotions twisting in his chest. After a pause, he looked at her seriously.
“Thank you,
Boss.”
“Go on.” She waved him off toward the bathroom.
When Leonard finally came back out, freshly changed, he saw Hayley in the kitchen, putting together a meal. His gaze flicked to the table, where she had left half a bottle of Valenex.
After a moment of hesitation, he asked, “Boss, could I have the rest of that medicine?”
Hayley, busy by the stove, glanced over her shoulder at him and casually nodded. “Take it.”
Relief swept over him. He checked in on Liam, who was still resting peacefully and looked stable. Then, he grabbed the Valenex and stepped outside.
Outside the shelter, things were grim.
“Ethan, hang in there!”
“Don’t waste medicine on me. We don’t have much left,” Ethan muttered, pale and slumped against the wall.
His teammates were working desperately to treat the wound in his leg.
He had been badly hurt by one of Hayley’s traps, which only made the injuries he already carried even worse. Ethan knew the truth- out here, with no real medical help and only scraps of supplies left, giving him medicine
was a waste.

“Save it for yourselves. I’m not making it through this, anyway.”
“Don’t talk like that! We’re not letting you die.”
“Even if it doesn’t work, we’ll still try!”
At that moment, a voice cut in from behind them.
“Use this.”
Leonard stepped out of the shelter, dressed in his new uniform and carrying the Valenex he had just gotten from Hayley.
Everyone’s eyes shot to him.
“Leonard! How’s the captain?”
