With a sharp clang, the hook caught solid.

Derek pulled the steel line tight. Once everyone helped secure it in place, he clipped his safety lock onto the cable and went firs

Whoosh!

With his light build, he moved smoothly across the line, gliding over the thick sea of zombies below until he reached the Defense Office on the other side.

After landing, he quickly checked the room he had come through. Once he was sure it was clear, he reinforced the grappling hook and waved to the group across the gap.

They could come over now.

One by one, the others followed.

There weren’t many of them on this run. Only eight people total.

When it was Liam’s turn, Hayley spoke up.

“I’m staying here.”

She stood on the near side of the cable, her eyes drifting toward the doorway where those people had been quietly watching them the whole time.

With outsiders nearby, someone had to stay behind.

And from the look of that group, they were the calculating type. Hayley didn’t trust them for a second.

“Alright. I’ll go,” Liam said.

“Don’t take long.”

He nodded at her, clipped his safety lock onto the cable, and pushed off, sliding toward the building across the gap

It was the closest spot they could find.

Even so, the distance was still over 30 feet.

Nearly 60 feet below, the ground was swallowed by a dark, shifting mass of zombies.

The moment they heard movement overhead, the creatures surged toward the sound. Low, rasping growls ochood upward, testing anyone’s nerves,

It was the kind of thing that made you afraid to even glance down.

If someone slipped and fell….

“There wouldn’t be anything left. Not even bones.

The zombies had been starving for a long, long time. They followed the motion shove them, pows open wide, wanting food drifted back and forth over their heads.

Hayley stayed by the cable, watching until Liam landed safely across the way inly then did the team is herepek

She was painfully thin. Her face looked almost skeletal. Long-term malnutrition had drained the life from her. Though she seemed to be in her twenties, she looked closer to forty, her skin dry and wrinkled from exhaustion and hunger.

But her features were delicate and well-shaped. It was easy to imagine that before everything fell apart, she had been strikingly beautiful.

“Have some water,” the woman said quietly, never lifting her head.

“Where’d you get water?” Hayley asked. “Collecting rain?”

The woman kept her mouth shut and stared at the floor.

“Answer a few questions, and I’ll give you something to eat,” Hayley said.

At that, the woman swallowed unconsciously. Her stomach was clearly empty, yet she still didn’t speak. Instead, she slowly lifted her head and looked at Hayley.

Their eyes met.

Her gaze was lifeless, as if she had already stopped caring about anything.

Hayley glanced at Griffin and gave him a subtle signal. He immediately got the message and stepped forward.

“Hey,” he said with a friendly smile. “I’m Griffin. What’s your name?”

The moment he approached, the woman jolted like a startled rabbit. She turned and bolted.
