Chapter 647
Large waves of zombies rushed up to the third floor.
Then, they began falling. One after another, they tumbled down the broken stairwell like a herd of antelope running off a cliff. Bodies slammed into the zombies below. Some crashed into the railings, while others dropped straight onto the growing pile beneath.
Not a single one made it up to the fifth floor.
Within minutes, the tall stairwell was packed solid with them.
The zombies writhed below like creatures trapped in a deep pit, craning their necks upward.
“Raarh… Raarh…”
They stared at the living people above them with relentless hunger.
Warren and the others instinctively backed away from the railing.
Hayley stayed where she was, gripping the stair rail and looking through the gaps at the massive swarm. Her brows tightened.
“Liam, how much longer?”
“We’ve found the records room,” Liam replied through the headset. “Looking for the files now. Twenty minutes at most.”
“Make it fast.”
Hayley didn’t say anything else. She kept watching the pile of zombies below grow thicker and thicker.
“What do we do now?” Ellen asked, her voice shaking. “The zombies are here!”
Warren stared down at the stairwell, his face grim.
“Move all the crops from the fifth floor upstairs,” he ordered “Then knock out the fifth-floor staircase, too. Hurry!”
At his command, the people in their little base nervously started heading downstairs.
The zombies had already reached the third floor.
Nobody knew how long the broken stairwell would hold them back.
They had to move the supplies first.
Warren led the way. With every step down, he got closer to the swarm below.
Layer after layer of zombies churned beneath them, wriggling and jumping like fish in a crowded pond. At any moment, it felt as
if they might leap upward and reach them,
One bite would be enough to tear open a skull
One claw could rip through a stomach and pull out warm, beating organs.
“Baarid”
“Raarhy
“Raarb! Rauch!”
Warren’s heart pesanded in his throat as he descendest

When he finally reached the fifth-floor landing, he quickly hugged the wall and slipped past the broken section of stairs before running into the fifth floor.
There was an open terrace on that level. The sunlight was good there, so they had set up their small garden in that space.
Rows of planters were lined up neatly across the terrace.
Warren grabbed the closest one, a pot with the healthiest potato plant, and turned to carry it upstairs.
The others rushed in after him, men and women alike. Everyone grabbed whatever they could carry.
Nobody cared about neatness anymore.
The zombies were right below them. There was no telling when they might climb up.
They had to take as many as possible and move fast!
Ellen was at the back of the group.
When she reached the fifth-floor landing, she glanced down the stairwell.
A female zombie was forcing its way up through the mass below. Its face was completely rotten, the front of its head stripped away. Only a small patch of scalp and hair clung to the back of its skull.
It craned its neck upward. Its gray-white eyes locked onto Ellen.
“Raarh! Raarh!”
The zombie lunged upward from the pile.
