Chapter 665
After that brief interruption, the armored vehicle rolled forward again.
They hadn’t gone far when something came into view ahead of Hayley. A large countryside resort had been sealed off with layers of barbed wire, wooden fencing, and crude barricades.
She could see people moving inside.
“Boss, look!” Thomas pointed toward a row of cars parked in a lot inside the fence.
One of them made Hayley’s heart jolt.
It was their zombie harvester, Vehicle Seven. Derek had taken it..
“Head there.”
A few minutes later, their armored vehicle stopped behind a large tree about 100 yards from the fence.
From this distance, they could clearly see the crowd inside. They were all people, not zombies.
Hayley couldn’t figure out why Derek’s vehicle was inside that compound. What surprised her even more was the size of the place.
It wasn’t some tiny hideout. It looked like a full mid-sized survivor settlement. Just from what she could see, there had to be at least 500 people living there.
Why had a settlement this big never contacted them?
Her base’s radio station had been broadcasting nonstop across the entire Eastern region for four straight years. Anyone who could receive the signal should at least send back a reply.
Small, isolated survivor groups might miss it, sure.
But a settlement this size? There was no way they didn’t know.
As Hayley studied the compound, her thoughts kept drifting back to Derek and the others.
She stepped out of the vehicle, leaving Leonard inside, and motioned for Griffin and Thomas to follow her toward the fence.
Just then, a small voice rang out behind her.
“Don’t go in there.”
Hayley turned.
It was the little girl they had rescued earlier that day.
Winona Shorts stood behind another tree, her thin face making her wide eyes look even bigger. She stared straight at Hayley.
“Oh, hey. It’s you,” Thomas said. The hard edge in his voice softened when he recognized her.
“You shouldn’t go in there,” Winona repeated. “They eat people.”
Griffin snorted. “Kid, these days, people eat people everywhere.”
Winona barely looked at him. Her gaze stayed locked on Hayley.
“Don’t go in there,” she said again. “They really eat people.”
“But I have to,” Hayley said calmly. “My friends are inside.”

on’t know,” Winona replied.
You don’t know?”
The old one wasn’t him,” Winona said. “He came about six months ago. Killed a lot of people here. Then he made himself the new base director.”
That caught Hayley off guard.
So the guy had taken the settlement by force.
Base wars weren’t unusual in the apocalypse. In her last life, Griffin had practically made a career out of stirring up conflicts inside survivor camps.
Still, outsiders seizing
