Chapter 680
Crash
Glass shattered
A window on the east side of the first floor gave way under the impact.
A gray, shriveled female zombie forced itself through the broken frame, clawing at the metal bars as squeezed inside
The jagged tips of the rusted bars punched straight into its temple. Its head tilted to the side, but it di feel a thing, still shoving forward.
The metal edge dragged from its temple down to its jaw, splitting the flesh open. Skin peeled back. Da clotted blood oozed from the wound, thick and foul.
Rearh. Raarh… Raarh!”
its head finally jammed against a heavy cabinet inside, but it kept thrashing, gripping the bars and slamming herself forward
Bang! Bang! Bang!
its face scraped back and forth between the bars, grinding the wound into a mess of torn flesh. Bits of meat caught on the rusted metal, drawing more zombies to crowd around the window.
“Raarh Raarh
“Raarh
Pale faces pressed in, one after another, rotting heads wedging into the gaps, all trying to force their way inside.
Whoosh!
A flashbang arced over their heads and landed farther out in the grass. The sound pulled a large group
of zombies away.
But when they reached it, there was nothing.
On the fourth floor, Hayley stood by the window, watching the swarm below, some still circling, some already drawn away.
“Two shifts tonight. Don’t sleep too deeply. Stay ready
‘Got
There was at least one mental-variant zombie out there, level six or higher.
Derek and Ethan took the first half of the night. Leonard and Thomas would cover the second. Hayley
stayed on alert the entire time.
Before long, the shift changed.
It was past 2 a.m.
The worst hour to stay awake.
A group had gathered around Hayley, some keeping watch while the others slept.
In that hushed, protective circle, she carefully got to her feet and slipped off to the bathroom, plannin grab a quick cigarette and clear her head.
She had just lit up when a shadow stepped into view.
“Give me one, too.”
Hayley looked up at Scott and handed him a cigarette.
“Here. Your knife.” She passed it back.
Scott glanced at it. “I gave that to you.”
Hayley paused, then slid it right back into the sheath at her back without another word.
“You’ve got plenty of supplies in your League,” Scott said, a faint smile on his face. “Food production’s back up, huh? Meat, too?”
“We get by.” Hayley’s tone turned vague as she brushed it off.
“Get by? You call that getting by? Your food’s way better than ours.”
“Come on. Last year at your place, I had barbecue ribs. Your base is the strong one. We’re nothing special.
Scott took a drag, watching her as she talked. She was smiling, so he smiled, too.
But after a moment, his expression shifted. The smile faded, replaced by something heavier.
“You still don’t want us to join you, do you?”
