The thought had barely formed in Hayley’s mind when the selection day arrived. It came before she even had the chance to track down the person who had been there the longest.
“Today is the day of our leadership selection. All candidates, board the aircraft and proceed to the trial site.”
A loud, mechanical voice echoed across the island.
At the announcement, people began boarding the helicopters one after another.
Parked in the square were massive heavy-lift helicopters, each capable of carrying 200 people. There were 18 in total, enough to transport everyone on site.
Everyone lined up and waited for their turn to board.
Quite a few looked eager, as if they were ready to prove themselves.
Before boarding, each person was handed a set of gear.
Hayley glanced through hers. It included a required communicator, a parachute pack, and a handgun.
The gun had only one bullet. It was hard to tell what they expected anyone to do with that.
But aside from her and Griffin, everyone else lit up the moment they saw the weapon.
“It’s a handgun!”
“We’ve got guns!”
“Don’t get too excited. There’s only one round in it,” a burly man in the crowd pointed out.
“Even one round can save your life!”
“Yeah, I’ve never even held a gun before. How do you use this thing?”
The whole place buzzed with excitement as people talked about how to use their new prize.
Not far from Hayley, a broad-shouldered man swept a cold glance over the crowd.
“Hand me all your bullets!”
At his command, the 20 or so people around him immediately gave up the rounds from their guns.
“That’s Preston Burns,” Tyler said quietly to Hayley. “He’s their leader. Supposedly, he’s got three types of gifts. He’s really strong.”
The supervisors didn’t react at all. Their silence was as good as permission. Soon, more small groups followed suit, their leaders collecting bullets from their own people.
There were still quite a few from Hayley’s original camp nearby, and their eyes gradually shifted toward

her.
They were clearly worried she would do the same.
“I’m telling you now, I’m not joining you. Don’t even think about taking my bullet.” Jocelyn clutched her gun, shot Hayley a cold look, and walked off.
Once she left, the others followed her.
In the end, only Barnaby, Garrick, Tyler, and the married couple from Hayley’s old dorm stayed behind.
Hayley looked at the nearly empty space around her. “If you’re sticking with me, say it now. And don’t slow me down. If you do, I won’t save you.”
The remaining few exchanged glances, then nodded without hesitation.
“That’s it. Keep your guns. I don’t want them.”
Relief flashed across their faces.
They all knew how capable Hayley was. The fact that she didn’t even want their bullets made things even
better.
