“Wait!” Hayley called out to the starry–eyed man. “What exactly is Ascendant Creed trying to do?”
The man stopped, something heavy settling across his expression.
“Ascendant Creed’s goal is evolution. Stop going up against them. Even if you destroy the Sovereign Academy, the Sovereign Research Institute, or Sovereign Industries, you still won’t touch their core. Those are just the surface. Go back and lie low. Stay away from them.”
He finished and walked straight toward the helicopter behind him, its engine still running. The rotors thundered as it lifted off and disappeared into the distance.
Hayley stood there, the word “evolution” echoing over and over in her mind.
At 3 a.m., a Haylight League helicopter arrived. Under the startled eyes of Tavian’s people, Hayley led Ruby and the others aboard.
“Hey, don’t forget to introduce me when your aunt wakes up!” Tavian shouted.
“Of course. I’ll tell her there’s a handsome guy here who fell for her while she was asleep.”
Tavian beamed, waving both hands. “That’s perfect! Safe travels, my friend! God bless you!”
“Stay in touch,” Hayley called back. “And God bless you, too.”
She said her goodbyes.
The entire island stood there in the dark, waving as they sent her off.
This was the second time she had run into people like this. Not everyone in this world had turned cold. When there was no conflict and things were stable enough, people could still be kind
It wasn’t all hopeless.
After more than ten hours in the air, Hayley finally returned to Haylight League.
They were back!
The moment her feet hit the ground at Haylight League, Hayley finally felt something solid beneath her again.
She was finally home.
They had brought back two groups.
One was Emerson, Willow, and the others she had first met at the outer camp. The other was the ten guards they had pulled in along the way.
The second they saw the main city of Haylight League, their eyes went wide.
“Damn!”
“Wow!”
“Jesus!”
One stunned exclamation after another spilled out as they looked around, unable to take it all in.
Back in the outer camp, Emerson and the others had already heard Hayley talk about building a massive safe zone out here.
They hadn’t believed her.

All they wanted back then was to get into the inner camp and secure their next meal.
Now, standing there in a city that was somehow still whole and alive, with empty streets free of zombies and people strolling by, relaxed and smiling, they could only stare in stunned disbelief.
How could a place like this even exist?
“Is this heaven?” Garrick muttered, staring at everything in front of him.
