Chapter 83

The next morning, Hayley pushed open the shelter door and found Leonard outside sharpening a blade.
Shhhk, shhhk, shhhk.
On a big whetstone, he was grinding a long sword back and forth. Every stroke sent a thin stream of water trickling down the blade, washing it clean as it got sharper and sharper.
The water came straight from his own ability—he didn’t even need a bucket.
When he finished the last stroke, a soft flash of blue light shimmered across the steel, and a cold, dangerous energy spread through the air.
The weapon was finally ready.
Leonard gripped the hilt tightly and swung the sword down with one strong motion.
Swish!
A chunk of scrap wood was split neatly into pieces. Every cut was clean and perfect. If that had been a zombie, it would’ve been sliced apart like a melon.
“That was fast,” Hayley said, a little impressed.
Leonard sheathed the sword and handed it to her. “This is a great sword. It has a solid build and is perfectly balanced–it’s really practical.”
“Nice work,” Hayley said, giving him an approving nod. “Next time I find a good one, I’ll save it for you.”
“No need,” Leonard said quickly. “I’ve got my own gear.”
He still had his old military equipment, though his gun was useless now without bullets, and all he had left was a short combat knife. Luckily, he also had his water–element gifts.
“Watch this,” he said.
He raised his hand, and a high–pressure stream of water shot out, blasting through the air with way more power than before.
“I don’t know what’s going on,”

Hayley gave a satisfied nod.
Of course, they had. She
said, surprised. “But when I woke up today, it felt like my powers got stronger.
a dose of that evolution serum.
Looked like from now on need to start saving some zombie cores–not just for trading, but for making
more serum.
A little every day, and both of their powers would skyrocket.
“Let’s move! Time to hunt some zombies!” Hayley said, energized and ready to go.
And just like that, ten days flew by.
Every day, Hayley and Leonard went out to expand their territory, then came back at night to use the reward points from their missions to upgrade the base.

She split the zombie cores they collected—half to be traded using the system, and half for extracting more evolution serum for both herself and Leonard.
They hadn’t run into any high–level zombies lately, and the outskirts were almost cleared.
Zombies out here were rare to begin with, and only a few even dropped cores. By the time Hayley and Leonard had pushed all the way to the edge of the city, they’d wiped out everything near their shelter and only found about 30 cores in total.
Still, the serum made from those cores boosted their powers noticeably.
Meanwhile, Hayley had completely reinforced their base using system materials.
Now, the shelter looked nothing like before. Its defenses were ten times stronger–so strong that even tanks and artillery couldn’t break through.
