“Seeing how close you and your wife are is a highlight of this trip for me,” Hayley said. “Congratulations.”
“Let’s talk about that when I get back.” Clark looked a little embarrassed. He turned to the people behind him. Everyone’s here, so let’s move out!”
Right then, another voice cut in.
“Wait, Clark! I’m coming, too!”
Ben came running over, a large mask covering his face. He went straight into the departing group.
The moment Clark and Whitney saw him, their expressions darkened.
“What are you doing? Stop messing around!” Whitney snapped before Clark could even speak.
“I’m going out to help Clark on this mission. How is that messing around?” Ben retorted,
“It’s dangerous out there. You’re not going!”
“Did you forget? When you were bleeding out back then, I carried you out myself. I’ll be fine!”
Whitney froze, caught off guard.
Clark stepped in. “Cut it out. Stay at base and keep your sister company.”
“So you look down on me, huh? Don’t think I don’t know. You’ve always thought I’m useless.”
Clark opened his mouth, then shut it again. He almost said, “Well, at least you’re self-aware.”
Instead, he exhaled. “It’s really dangerous out there. I’m not joking.”
“Neither am I!” Ben’s voice hardened. “I’m almost 30. I can’t keep hiding behind you two and getting laughed at. I need to stand on my own!”
As he said it, his eyes flicked toward Hayley behind Clark.
There was a new kind of resolve in his gaze.
What he said caught a lot of people off guard.
“Clark, take him with you. Just be careful,” Whitney said, nodding.
She looked at her brother like she was seeing him in a new light, surprise and pride filling her eyes.
“Alright.” Clark nodded.
His wife had spoken. That settled it.
In the end, aside from him and Hayley, he brought 40 people along.
June and her group of four were included.
They set out in three military pickup trucks.
As they followed Clark out, Ben passed by Hayley and muttered under his breath, “I didn’t rat you out to my sister. Don’t think I did. You stuck-up, shallow woman.”
Hayley blinked at him, speechless.

The three armored trucks rolled toward Fairfield. They arrived before 9 a.m. The city was still wrapped in a thick green toxic haze.
The vehicles stopped on high ground at the edge of the city.
From inside, Hayley looked out at the fog. “Mr. Kinsman, do you know where this gas comes from?”
“It only showed up in the last two years. I don’t know the source yet,” Clark said.
“The last two years?” Hayley frowned.
the She had assumed it came from chemical plant leaks, something bound to happen sooner or later. However, apocalypse had already lasted over four years. If that were the case, it should have happened much earlier, not just recently.
