The Ending She Read (And the One He Rewrote) novel Chapter 38

The makeup artist paused, catching sight of her assistant's stifled smile and cute mouth shape in the mirror.

S... Summer Mist?

That cheap body spray?

“Mrs. Whitaker, you are so cute!” The apprehension she had before coming was swept away, and she offered a sincere suggestion with a smile. “You have a radiant complexion and striking, three-dimensional features... I think you don't need heavy makeup; a thin, almost invisible layer would suit you perfectly. What do you think?”

“You're the professional, you make the call!”

“Alright!”

Harriet ultimately chose the aquamarine set she fell in love with at first sight.

A black velvet ankle-length gown.

Her hair pinned up high.

Without needing elaborate accessories, just an aquamarine necklace and a pair of earrings.

Just by turning her head slightly or angling her body, the beauty in the mirror radiated glamour, vividly stepping right out of the reflection.

Harriet was extremely satisfied.

As the Maybach sped towards the reception venue, Harriet leaned against the window, rested in the seat, snapped countless selfies from every angle, and sent the best ones to Audrey.

She received an endless shower of rainbow compliments in return.

Her phone rang.

It was Lana calling.

Thinking Seraphina missed her mommy, Harriet's voice was sickeningly sweet when she answered, “Hello?”

“Ma'am, this is bad...” Lana's voice was urgent. “Seraphina has a fever!”

The shock and suspicion from when Seraphina got hurt in the greenhouse at the Sargent villa surged back into her mind. Harriet urgently asked, “What about Archer?”

“Archer is fine.”

“Did you call the doctor?”

“I called the doctor over as soon as the fever started. We gave her medication, but half an hour passed and the fever still hasn't broken. The doctor gave her an injection, but it's been so long and her fever still won't go down...”

Lana was great with kids, but facing such a tricky situation for the first time, in an unfamiliar city like Portsmouth, she panicked.

She could hear Seraphina's weak, hoarse crying in the background, who knew how long she had been crying.

Harriet's heart twisted into a knot.

Archer was fine, which meant her previous guess was wrong.

“Yes!”

Orders were absolute. Two acknowledged, spun the steering wheel left, and drove the car out of the lane, heading far away.

“Huh, isn't that Mrs. Whitaker's car? Why did it drive away?”

“I heard Mrs. Whitaker has a bit of a temper. Is she throwing a fit again?”

“Shh, Mr. Whitaker is here!”

As the whispers rose, Jason looked at the Maybach making a U-turn at the traffic light in the distance and driving away.

His gaze turned cold and dark.

He shouldn't have harbored any illusions.

To actually think she had truly changed, that she was learning how to be a good mother and a good wife.

To not even show her face and just turn around and leave at an occasion like this—he could only imagine what the local tabloids would write tomorrow.

Withdrawing his gaze, he turned and walked away.

Ding!

His phone chimed softly.
