Jillian froze, but she quickly processed the situation.

What had just happened was a genuine brush with death.

For a wealthy heir like Leon, who held immense status, life was incredibly precious.

This was likely the first time he had ever experienced something so terrifying. It was only natural that he was still shaken.

Waiting for him to regain his composure, Jillian awkwardly patted his back.

"It's over," she said softly.

Leon's senses slowly returned. Realizing how inappropriate his reaction was, he quickly pulled away.

"I apologize, Ms. Jarrett. I must look like a fool."

Jillian offered a small smile. "It's fine. I was terrified just now, too."

Leon stared at her deeply.

Being scared was a normal human reaction, yet Jillian had remained extraordinarily calm and composed throughout the ordeal, showing absolutely no outward signs of fear.

He honestly believed that if he had been behind the wheel today, he wouldn't have handled it half as well.

Just as they were about to get back into the car, a police cruiser pulled up. A traffic officer stepped out to ask what happened.

It turned out the traffic cameras had caught their car endlessly circling the ramp. The automated system flagged it as a vehicle malfunction, prompting the officer to investigate.

Jillian briefly explained the situation and then called the automaker's remote service center to report the severe autonomous driving failure.

After making the report, she dropped Leon off at his hotel and drove herself back to The Yale Residences.

It was past 1 AM when she arrived, and the imposing gates of the estate were shut tight.

She rang the bell, but no one came to open it.

The passcode for the smart lock had been changed after she moved out the last time, and Mrs. Zeller hadn't bothered to give her the new one.

Exhausted, Jillian sat back in her car. She debated just sleeping in the driver's seat for a few hours, but then she remembered Connor's cruel prank that had left her freezing outside all night.

She refused to let this happen again. If she allowed it a second time, there would be a third, and a hundred more after that.

Mrs. Zeller stiffened. That response was entirely different from what she had anticipated.

"Right, of course," she muttered, reluctantly pressing the gate release button.

The heavy gates slowly swung open. Jillian drove the car in, parked, and got out.

She pushed the front door open and bent down to change her shoes. When she looked up, she saw a single dim light illuminated in the living room, casting shadows over Killian as he sat reading his files.

She paused, unsure of what to say, and turned to head upstairs.

"Where were you?"

Killian asked without lifting his head.

"A dinner with colleagues." Jillian kept her back to him.

"You're working at Daniel's company."

It was a statement, not a question. Jillian bit her lip, knowing there was no point in hiding it now.
