Before leaving, Daniel gave Leon a light kick. "Behave yourself, and don't cause any trouble for Jillian."

Leon, half-drunk and half-asleep, mumbled a vague response.

The staff helped maneuver Leon into the car. Daniel sent the hotel address to Jillian's phone, and she punched it into the navigation system before starting the engine.

There were hardly any cars on the highway, and a light drizzle began to fall from the sky.

Leon, who had been resting in the back seat, groggily sat up and rubbed his neck with a grimace.

Jillian glanced at him through the rearview mirror. "Sorry, Mr. Quincy. The ride must be a bit uncomfortable."

She figured Leon had never ridden in a thirty-thousand-dollar commuter car before. Compared to his usual luxury rides, it was bound to feel rough.

"It's fine. I probably just drank too much," Leon said, sitting up straight and looking ahead.

"You're a very steady driver, Ms. Jarrett."

Jillian blinked, trying to soothe her bloodshot eyes.

Leon noticed. "I'm sorry you have to drive me back. It's late, and you must be exhausted."

Jillian shook her head. Seeing that the road was empty, she engaged the autonomous driving mode and stretched her stiff muscles.

The rain poured harder, blanketing the entire highway in a hazy mist.

Jillian's grip on the steering wheel gradually relaxed.

The car entered a circular ramp and should have seamlessly merged onto the main road according to the route. Instead, it continued circling the curved lane over and over again.

The speed remained high, far exceeding the ramp's limit.

"What's going on?" Leon realized something was wrong.

Jillian gripped the wheel tightly and pressed a few buttons. A cold, mechanical voice repeated: "Lane keep assist normal. Cruise control stable."

"That's not right," Jillian muttered, her heart sinking.

"Don't force the wheel, it'll trigger a harder system lock," Leon couldn't help but warn.

"I know," Jillian said, both hands gripping the wheel as she stared intensely at the asphalt. "I'll find an opening to cut the power."

They took another sharp curve. The centrifugal force caused a slight drift in the chassis. In a split second, Jillian slammed the emergency override button and stomped hard on the brakes.

With a low hum, the autonomous system completely disengaged.

Leon let out a massive breath, but Jillian didn't relax for a second. She swiftly took manual control, reduced their speed, merged smoothly off the ramp onto the main road, and pulled the car over into a safe zone.

He threw the door open, scrambled out of the vehicle, and took several deep, greedy breaths of air.

Jillian stepped out of the driver's seat. "Mr. Quincy."

She wanted to offer a few words of comfort.

Instead, Leon turned around and pulled her into a tight, crushing hug.
