In the past, Eleanor had occasionally shown Jillian fake kindness, operating on the principle that 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend,' solely because Sienna despised Jillian and Eleanor despised Sienna. Ignorant outsiders might have even assumed Eleanor was fond of her.
But Jillian knew the truth: it was merely a performance to irritate Sienna.
The dynamics within the Quincy family were always incredibly toxic.
"Because we..."
Jillian made the split-second decision to announce their impending divorce so everyone could emotionally prepare themselves.
"Because she has clinical depression and is on medication," Killian suddenly interjected, cutting her off entirely.
Jillian jerked her head up in absolute shock, staring at him.
Killian remained infuriatingly composed, elegantly cradling his teacup. He looked aloof and untouchable, refusing to even glance in her direction.
"Depression?" Natalie screeched. "Are you kidding me? How has the Quincy family ever wronged you? Who are you trying to guilt-trip with this depression nonsense?"
Sienna furrowed her brow. "Why would you suddenly be depressed? Is... is this your own diagnosis, or did a hospital actually confirm it?"
Jillian bit her lip. She could hear the implication perfectly: Sienna was accusing her of faking an illness to play the victim.
"What is wrong with young people today?" Eleanor threw her hands up in exasperation. "You have food, shelter, and zero worries, yet you still claim to be depressed. If word gets out, people will think we abuse you."
Jillian gripped her teacup tightly, her chest tightening. She was sick. She hadn't committed murder or arson. Why was she sitting here being cross-examined like a criminal?
"I..." She tried to defend herself.
"Since she is currently on medication, she needs to focus on curing the illness first. Having a child isn't an immediate priority," Killian stated firmly.
Eleanor sighed heavily. "I suppose that's our only option. Fine. Just focus on getting your health in order first."
Standing up, Eleanor offered a dismissive wave toward Jillian.
It was glaringly obvious that shelving the baby plans again infuriated her.
And in her eyes, Jillian was the sole culprit.
That night, they didn't leave the estate.
Connor stayed in Sienna's room, while Jillian and Killian returned to their private suite in the mansion.
At the time, he assumed it was just another pathetic stunt to grab his attention.
Disgusted by such manipulative tactics, and repulsed by her expanding figure, he had completely cut off physical contact with her as punishment.
He hadn't realized she was already drowning in depression.
However, the revelation didn't spark a single ounce of guilt in Killian.
Everything Jillian was enduring now was precisely what she deserved.
"You don't actually think I brought up your illness today because I care about you, do you?" Killian scoffed.
Jillian's fingers dug into the doorframe. "No. You just needed an excuse to get Grandma to back off about a second child."
"Glad we're on the same page."
Jillian let out a breath and turned toward the guest room when Killian spoke again.
"Quit your job at Daniel's company. I expect your resignation next week."
