"I'm not quitting," Jillian said, turning back to face him.
"Next week. I'll wait for the news of your resignation," Killian stated. He stood up and walked toward the bathroom without another word.
Jillian stared at his retreating back until the door clicked shut, then finally went to the guest room to rest.
That night, Jillian tossed and turned in bed, unable to fall asleep.
Project Astra snatching the contract from Project Skiff had absolutely nothing to do with her. Ultimately, she was just an entry-level employee; a deal of that magnitude was far beyond her sphere of influence.
Killian obviously knew that. He was demanding she resign not because of the stolen contract, but simply because he wanted a punching bag to vent his frustrations on.
Early the next morning, Jillian got up, gathered her things, and immediately left for work.
She had no desire to interact with the Quincy family. If she stayed, Eleanor and the others would undoubtedly weaponize her depression to force her into resigning.
At eight-thirty, the morning sun bathed the manicured lawns in gold as Eleanor and the others enjoyed breakfast under the patio umbrellas.
The butler escorted Leon out.
Eleanor stood up excitedly, her face beaming. "You brat, when did you get back? You didn't even give us a heads-up!"
"Killian," she waved him over.
"Leon just got back a few days ago. It's been too long since you two brothers have seen each other."
Leon offered the first greeting. "Killian."
Killian gave a curt nod.
"When did you get back?"
"A few days ago."
Leon didn't specify the exact date. He knew Killian was hyper-paranoid, and given his own complicated standing in the family, it was best to stay vague.
But honestly, he didn't care. He had built his businesses from the ground up without taking a single dime from the Quincy estate, meaning he never had to walk on eggshells around Killian.
Killian picked up on the evasive answer but didn't push it. He gestured to a chair. "Have a seat. Join us for breakfast."
Connor stormed over, visibly upset, while a maid carefully carried his backpack behind him.
"Look what time it is! No one even woke me up. I'm late for school!"
Killian kept his eyes down, meticulously peeling a hard-boiled egg for Connor, looking entirely indifferent to his wife's whereabouts.
The butler quickly chimed in. "The young madam left very early this morning. She mentioned she had to get to work."
Eleanor let out a dismissive "Oh."
Leon observed the family's reaction. It was glaringly obvious that no one at that table gave a damn about Jillian.
It seemed she truly was despised by her own household.
He decided not to press the issue.
After breakfast, Eleanor pulled Leon into her private sitting room.
"You really should have informed Killian before coming back."
Leon scoffed. "I came back to run my own businesses, not to steal his throne. Is he the Emperor now? Do I have to report my every movement to him?"
Eleanor sighed heavily.
Years ago, she had toyed with the idea of positioning Leon to replace Killian, but unfortunately, her second son's entire lineage was no match for Killian's ruthless maneuvering.
