Just then, Leon walked in. Since he wasn't technically an employee of Langley Tech yet, he simply reached over, swiped Daniel's ID badge, and used it to buy his lunch.
After getting his food, he carried his tray over and sat across from her as well.
Daniel scoffed. "Are you just going to freeload at my company every day?"
Leon bristled. "Is that how you talk to an investor? Are my billions of dollars not even worth a meal?"
"Billions? I haven't seen a single dime yet."
"It's on the way! If you keep giving me this attitude, you won't get a cent!"
Jillian burst out laughing. These two bickered like children.
At the adjacent tables, several colleagues remained perfectly silent but nudged each other with their elbows, exchanging knowing glances.
"Sigh, what can you do? Some people are just born with a talent for pleasing the big bosses," someone muttered under their breath.
The others felt a sour pang of jealousy.
After all, Jillian hadn't gone through standard recruitment; Daniel had personally brought her in.
Normally, aside from a few top executives, none of the regular employees dared to interact with a big boss like Daniel.
Jillian was the sole exception.
A few times before, when Daniel didn't eat in the cafeteria and ordered takeout, he would call Jillian into his office to eat with him.
Even back then, rumors had started brewing. Beatrice's outburst had merely shattered the illusion of subtlety.
"By the way, are you free this weekend?" Leon asked suddenly.
Jillian was mid-chew, so Daniel answered for her: "She's busy."
"How do you know?"
Jillian quickly waved her hand. "I really am busy. I have other plans."
"Oh."
He didn't ask what the plans were, and Jillian didn't elaborate.
Once Jillian finished her meal, she excused herself and left early.
Daniel remarked, "She has to look after her kid this weekend. She genuinely doesn't have time."
Leon paused with his food halfway to his mouth.
Jillian was married? He looked at Daniel.
"No overtime, huh? I knew it, Mr. Langley is the best boss in the country. So considerate of his employees." With that, she dragged Jillian away.
Daniel shook his head helplessly.
He had to admit, more and more of his friends were growing bold enough to joke around with him these days.
Once they arrived at Atelier Luxe, Mallory chattered non-stop while browsing the racks.
"When attending this kind of gala, no matter your goal, you need a suitable gown to hold your own."
Mallory picked out a dress, held it against Jillian, and shook her head. "Too tacky."
"How about this one?" She pushed aside a few dresses and asked excitedly, only to lock eyes with someone standing just ahead.
Jillian didn't hear her response and, wondering what was wrong, walked over. She saw Preston standing right in front of them.
Beside Preston was a young girl. She was fairly pretty, dressed from head to toe in a sweet, princess aesthetic.
"Preston, darling, what's wrong?"
The girl tilted her head curiously, her voice dripping with sugar.
"Nothing." Preston wrapped an arm around the girl's shoulder and guided her to another section. "Pick whatever you like."
