Connor's eyes lit up the moment he saw her.
"Mom, I'm playing dinosaur versus car! Who do you think will win this time?"
Jillian reached out and ruffled her son's hair.
He was a boy, after all. Connor had loved combat games since he was little, constantly pitting cars, dinosaurs, and action figures against each other, always giving them elaborate storylines.
Jillian pointed at the little dinosaur. "Let the dinosaur win."
Connor's brow furrowed. "But Mom, I want the car to win this time."
Jillian teased him, "Isn't the little dinosaur your favorite?"
"Yes, but I like the car more lately."
"Alright, then the car wins."
As Jillian spoke, she realized the toy car looked unfamiliar.
She bought most of Connor's toys, and even if someone else bought them, she was the one who organized them.
Jillian picked up the car. "Con..."
Connor snatched the car back, hiding it behind his back.
"Okay, Mom, you should go to sleep," he said.
"You don't want me to stay with you today?"
"I want Dad to stay with me today."
Jillian stood up, glancing behind Connor.
She was certain she had never seen that toy car before.
She stepped out into the hallway and gently pulled the door shut, but left it cracked open a fraction of an inch.
Through the narrow gap, she saw Connor place the toy car next to his pillow and pat it with his small hand. "Since you won, Sylvia can accompany me to the event."
Then, he looked at the little dinosaur on the desk and patted it as well. "Mom, don't cry. It's your fault for losing this time. Try harder next time."
Jillian's fingers curled inward one by one, then slowly released.
It was a childish game; he was the one who decided who won and who lost.
The car won simply because it represented Sylvia.
"There's something I need to talk to you about," Daniel said.
"What is it?"
Daniel thought for a moment. "Let's talk over lunch."
At noon, Daniel didn't order takeout in his office like he usually did. Instead, he went down to the staff cafeteria to eat with everyone else.
He got his food and sat down directly across from Jillian.
"Any plans for the weekend?" Daniel asked.
His voice was neither too loud nor too soft. The people at the neighboring tables obviously heard him, but they pretended not to notice, burying their heads in their meals.
Jillian knew they were all ears.
But she had nothing to hide, and she refused to let baseless gossip dictate her life.
"Yes, I do."
The hand Daniel used to hold his silverware paused for a second. "Alright, never mind then."
