"Sylvia?"
Jillian couldn't help but exclaim, absolute astonishment filling her eyes.
Sylvia was only in her twenties. She hadn't accomplished anything remarkable in her academic or professional career. On what grounds was she getting a personal documentary?
She exchanged a bewildered glance with Daniel.
Mrs. Summers walked over with a plate of fruit, scoffing. "That young woman hasn't made a single significant contribution to society. Why would she deserve her own documentary? At the end of the day, it's all funded by Quincy Tech."
The light in Jillian's eyes instantly dimmed.
So it was Killian's doing again.
Catching her sudden drop in mood, Daniel quickly stepped in to lighten the atmosphere. "It's the professor's birthday today. Let's not talk about all that."
"Right, right, let's skip it," Jillian agreed, pushing down her churning emotions and clearing her head.
They stayed for a wonderful meal with Professor Summers, followed by fresh tea and a long catch-up session.
Since retiring, Professor Summers had shed a lot of his formerly strict and severe demeanor. He had grown fond of casual chatter, eagerly asking Jillian about her life and romantic situation over the past few years.
Jillian felt too awkward to answer, but every time the topic came up, Daniel smoothly steered the conversation in another direction.
After they bid the professor farewell, Jillian finally asked softly, "Daniel, did you already know about Sylvia's documentary?"
Daniel nodded. "Some people were talking about it in our alumni group chat. Killian is deliberately backing her to build up her personal brand. He's probably using this documentary to craft a flawless, glamorous public image for her."
Jillian gave a quiet hum of acknowledgment, her eyes completely calm. Truth be told, Sylvia's family had always pushed for this kind of attention back in college.
Once the summer break officially began, the school organized a ten-day international study camp. Connor had enthusiastically signed up on his own.
It was the first time the boy would be traveling away from his family without them, let alone out of the country. Jillian was inevitably anxious.
After enrolling, Connor had eagerly asked her, "Mom, the teacher said parents can come along if they just pay an extra registration fee. Will you come with me?"
Jillian's heart tugged, but she quickly felt caught in a bind.
Students got summer breaks, but working professionals had no such luxury.
And for someone in her position at a major tech company, a ten-day vacation was practically unheard of.
Given her friendship with Daniel, she could probably get the time off if she asked, but that would just be cashing in personal favors without a legitimate reason.
