Her anxiety persisted right up until Connor boarded the plane and vanished into the sky.
Waving up at the clouds, Jillian suddenly realized she was coping surprisingly well with her son traveling abroad without her.
When it actually came down to it, it wasn't nearly as terrifying as she had anticipated.
This was probably for the best. Without the constant, nerve-wracking pressure of hovering over her child, she could slowly start directing more of her energy toward her own life.
But once she got back to the office, the thought of it being his first solo trip overseas made her lingering worries bubble up again.
Her melancholy was written all over her face.
Near the end of the workday, Leon came over to say hello. Jillian managed a faint, polite smile in response before turning away.
"What's up with her?" Leon asked, turning back.
Daniel looked down at his phone, typing out a message as he casually replied, "Her kid just left for a summer camp overseas. She's just worried about him."
Leon sat down next to him. Even now, he was still having a hard time wrapping his head around the fact that Jillian was already married with a child.
He had been invited to a charity gala recently and originally wanted to ask Jillian to be his plus-one. Finding out she was married had completely killed the idea.
Unable to find another suitable date on such short notice, he had ultimately skipped the event altogether.
"She always seems so unhappy," Leon speculated. "Is she stuck in a bad marriage?"
Daniel finally glanced up at him. His lips parted, but he couldn't find the right words to respond.
Initially, he hadn't intentionally hidden Jillian's identity, assuming Leon and Jillian would inevitably cross paths at the Quincy family estate.
Beatrice quickly returned the handshake. Her gaze settled on Sylvia, her tone laced with admiration. "You are incredibly young and yet so exceptionally capable, Sylvia. It's truly impressive."
"You flatter me," Sylvia laughed modestly before steering the conversation. "You used to work at Mr. Langley's company. What made you suddenly decide to jump to Quincy Tech?"
Beatrice scowled. "The culture there is toxic. I absolutely despise it when talentless people try to sleep their way to the top. That's why I chose to leave."
Sylvia chuckled softly. "Every company has a few of those. We just have to focus on our own work."
"No, this was completely different," Beatrice insisted, shaking her head with utter disgust. "If someone wants to claw their way up, they should at least have the assets to back it up. I can understand if a gorgeous woman wants to lock down a rich man—it's human nature to seek better prospects. But some people are utterly useless and yet still arrogant enough to forget their place. Mr. Quincy is lucky to have an efficient, competent partner like you. The atmosphere here must be fantastic. Unlike Mr. Langley, who always keeps this girl named Jillian Jarrett buzzing around him. She has no looks, zero talent, and walks around with a perpetual sad-sack face just to milk his sympathy."
"Jillian?" Sylvia's eyebrows twitched upward.
"You probably haven't heard of her. I resigned specifically because of her. She was just an intern who'd been there for a few months, and Mr. Langley actually fired me just to protect her," Beatrice ranted indignantly.
