A flash of awkwardness crossed Sylvia's face. She shot a quick glance at Killian before rushing to smooth things over. "Well, people always play favorites. These things are hard to avoid."

"I can understand playing favorites, but I busted my ass for Mr. Langley for years! I bled for that company! For him to fire me over some newbie... anyone with eyes can see there's something inappropriate going on between them. Everyone at the office knows it. I wasn't the only one disgusted by it."

Sylvia immediately interrupted her. "This is a professional environment. We should stick to business and leave the private gossip alone."

"I was just venting a bit of frustration, just blowing off steam," Beatrice waved her hand dismissively, yet continued her tirade anyway. "The whole company is buzzing about their affair. If Mr. Langley really wanted to spoil her, he could just set her up in a nice apartment! Why drag her into the office to make everyone else sick?"

Beatrice was still talking when Killian abruptly stood up and strode straight out of the office.

Sylvia immediately cut the conversation short, threw Beatrice a warning look, and hurried out after him.

"It might just be a coincidence, someone with the same name," Sylvia murmured, linking her arm through Killian's to soothe him.

Killian let out a cold scoff. There were no coincidences like that in the real world. Daniel and Jillian—both names matched perfectly, and Beatrice had just transferred from Daniel's company.

Killian's face darkened, though he didn't show any other obvious reaction.

Sylvia watched him carefully before pressing on.

"Actually, I remember Daniel always taking special care of Jillian back in college. So many girls in our department had a massive crush on him, but he only ever paid attention to Jillian."

Killian turned his sharp gaze to Sylvia. She spread her hands in a self-deprecating gesture. "So whenever I hit a wall with my coursework and wanted to ask Daniel for help, I always had to go through Jillian first just to get an audience."

Killian said nothing, only offering a vague, unreadable grunt of acknowledgment.

A few days passed.

After clocking out one evening, Jillian joined her team for a casual dinner. With no managers present, everyone let loose and enjoyed a few drinks.

Now that Connor was gone, Killian's naturally icy disposition dictated the mood of the house. He hated noise, so the staff moved like ghosts, making the massive mansion feel overwhelmingly desolate.

Most of the time, Jillian felt like she and Killian were simply two shadows haunting the same estate, destined never to intersect.

*Smack.* Killian tossed a plastic card onto the coffee table.

Jillian instantly recognized it as the debit card used for The Yale Residences' household expenses.

Normally, all the groceries, maintenance, miscellaneous bills, and her monthly allowance were pulled from this account, entirely managed by Mrs. Zeller.

Killian had never cared about domestic issues, leaving every tiny detail in Mrs. Zeller's hands.

"Mrs. Zeller is getting old. She'll be resting at home from now on. You are taking over the household management."
