Sienna had never liked Jillian, yet in that moment, a flicker of unexpected pity stirred within her.
"The elderly can be temperamental. Go back and think carefully about what you might have done wrong, but don't take it too hard."
It was a rare moment of goodwill from Sienna.
Jillian saw right through it. Sienna's pity was solely because she had just been slapped by Eleanor.
"I know," Jillian replied, keeping her eyes lowered, her voice flat.
Watching her lifeless demeanor, Sienna's fleeting sympathy vanished instantly, leaving her thinking that Eleanor's slap had been far too light.
Killian remained silent the entire drive back, steering the car directly toward The Yale Residences.
Jillian helped Connor out of the car.
Assuming she was staying the night, Connor's eyes lit up. "Mom, please don't leave tonight? We can pack my things for school together. I have to go to the opening ceremony too!"
Looking at the child's innocent smile, Jillian gently ruffled his hair. "Mom isn't staying here tonight. Have Mrs. Zeller help you pack."
Connor's face darkened, his lips jutting out as his eyes welled with tears. "You're always like this! Do you not love me anymore? Are you going to find the quiet one again?"
Jillian frowned, her tone strict. "Connor, Mom told you, you are not allowed to call someone by that rude name."
Furious, Connor slapped her hand away and ran upstairs crying. Mrs. Zeller quickly rushed after him.
Jillian looked up, meeting Killian's dark, unfathomable gaze.
His eyes were like a churning, freezing ocean, utterly devoid of warmth.
"If that's the case, you don't need to attend Connor's opening ceremony or any kindergarten activities from now on," Killian said coldly.
Jillian met his gaze. "So, you plan to have Sylvia accompany you?"
"None of your business."
Jillian nodded.
She had intended to leave right then, but suddenly turned and walked into the villa. Having spent this time with her mother and grandmother, she had long since let it go.
She had only returned today to completely clear out the rest of her belongings.
Closing the bedroom door, she quietly organized her things. A small shipping bag sitting on the corner of the desk caught her eye.
She suddenly remembered this was a package returned from the orphanage that she had forgotten to open.
