Right before Connor's school started, Jillian finally returned to the old Quincy estate to visit Eleanor.
During dinner, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.
Natalie suddenly spoke up. Her tone seemed innocent, but her words were intentionally abrasive. "Jillian, I remember on the day of your engagement party with Killian, I only saw Mrs. Jarrett. How come we never met your father?"
The moment those words dropped, the dining table fell into a dead silence.
Everyone knew Natalie was using Silas's birthday banquet incident to publicly humiliate Jillian.
Killian kept his eyes down, patiently feeding Connor.
With Jillian away recently, he was the one taking care of the boy most of the time, and he had slowly gotten used to it.
Sienna shot her daughter a quick look, coughing lightly to signal her to rein it in. But Natalie was too spoiled to care.
Unexpectedly, Eleanor suddenly interrupted, her tone laced with displeasure. "Can't food keep your mouth shut?"
She shot Natalie an icy glare.
Natalie froze.
She could act spoiled and willful in front of Sienna, but she had always played the part of the obedient, sensible child around Eleanor. After all, she was just an adopted daughter; it was Sienna who had insisted on taking her in, and Eleanor had never shown her any special affection.
Being reprimanded in public, Natalie didn't dare act out anymore and obediently lowered her head to eat.
After dinner, the servants brought out pastries and fruit.
The evening breeze was cool. Eleanor sat by the lake, enjoying the breeze, and spoke up to comfort Jillian. "Natalie is spoiled by her mother. She doesn't know her limits when she speaks, so don't take it to heart."
"I know," Jillian lowered her eyes, her expression utterly flat.
Sienna heard the implication perfectly; Eleanor was criticizing her for poor parenting.
She softly defended herself, "Mother, Natalie is still young. She was just joking around."
