A wave of deep panic seized Connor. He clutched his smartwatch tightly and whispered, "Mom... do you still want to see me?"
What he truly wanted to ask was if she still loved him, but the words felt too overwhelming to say out loud. As long as he could see her, that would be enough.
"Of course. I would love to see you," Jillian's soothing voice echoed through the tiny speaker.
"Can you come see me right now?"
"I actually called to ask if you were free this weekend."
"I'm free!" Connor instantly shouted, his excitement spiking. "When are you coming? Dad and I can wait for you together!"
A heavy silence fell over the line before Jillian answered softly. "No. Just you."
Connor deflated slightly but obediently agreed. "Okay."
"Con," Jillian suddenly remembered something and probed gently. "Are you still taking painting lessons from Silas over the weekends?"
"I took classes with Mr. Xavier for two years, but I stopped. Dad said he wasn't fit to teach kids, so he hired a professional art tutor for me instead."
Jillian was taken aback. She had assumed Silas would have continued mentoring him in art over the last five years, never expecting Killian to take the initiative and fire the man.
"Mom, I have three youth programming classes on Sunday afternoon. Can you come wait for me outside my classroom? Mrs. Zeller and the driver usually drop me off, and Dad never shows up, so I can totally ditch them."
"Alright, I'll be there," Jillian promised.
The moment he hung up, Connor's chest practically exploded with joy. He threw himself onto his bed, burying his face in his pillow and letting out a squeal of sheer excitement. The sudden noise caught the attention of Killian, who was passing by. He pushed the door open, his dark gaze locking onto his son. "What's going on?"
"Nothing!" Connor instantly bolted upright.
