As she spoke, she reached out to pull away the blankets Sylvia had wrapped tightly around herself.
That sentence was the spark that finally ignited Sylvia's suppressed rage. She erupted in a flash, violently throwing off the covers as she roared with pent-up hysteria.
"I've had enough! If you want to suck up to the Quincys, go do it yourself! You're so chummy with Sienna Sterling now anyway, so why are you still using me as your pawn?!"
Madeline's pupils shrank, startled by her daughter's sudden outburst. Furious and humiliated, she scolded her.
"I just offered you a few words of advice! I am your mother. Do I not even have the right to discipline you? Everything I've meticulously arranged has been for your own good from the very start."
"For my own good?" Sylvia sneered, her eyes rimmed with red, her words piercing. "And how great did your life turn out? Didn't the Xavier family still kick you out?"
The words struck like a blade, ruthlessly slicing into Madeline's deepest wound.
She stiffened entirely and instinctively raised her hand, preparing to slap Sylvia across the face.
Sylvia bit her lip hard, tilting her chin up stubbornly. She didn't dodge or flinch, her eyes burning with defiance.
Right before her palm made contact with the cheek, Madeline forced herself to stop.
Looking at her daughter, she spoke weakly.
"I was kicked out back then precisely because of you. Anyone else has the right to judge me, but you do not."
With that, Madeline turned furiously on her heel and stormed out, slamming the door hard behind her.
Dead silence returned to the room.
Sylvia ran her hands through her long hair in frustration, a chaotic mix of emotions swirling in her chest.
She felt a twinge of regret for the vicious, impulsive things she had said, but overwhelmingly, she felt a euphoric release from finally venting the resentment that had been festering for years.
