Jillian stayed with Mallory for the next few days. Thankfully, Mallory had a resilient, upbeat personality and didn't wallow in self-pity for too long. Within a few days, she was back to her usual self, cracking jokes and laughing.

Seeing her friend stabilize, Jillian finally headed back to her own apartment.

By the time she arrived, the sun had already set.

She slipped her heels off in the entryway. Walking past Judith's bedroom, she caught a glimpse of her mother through the cracked door. Judith was meticulously cleaning a battered toy dump truck, her eyes heavy with a profound, helpless sorrow. It looked as though she was cradling her precious grandson, not just a piece of plastic.

Jillian lowered her eyes, a massive wave of guilt crashing over her.

Because of her, Judith had barely seen Connor in years. Ultimately, Jillian knew she had failed her family.

From the moment Connor was born, Judith had practically raised him. Jillian had absolutely no right to sever that bond and deny her mother the chance to see her grandson.

Furthermore, both Judith and Lydia were getting older. At their age, a child's laughter was the only remedy for their deep-seated loneliness.

But because Jillian had been so powerless in her marriage, her mother was barred from seeing the very child she had nurtured.

"Mom," Jillian called softly, knocking on the door frame.

Judith panicked, hastily shoving the toy truck behind a throw pillow before rushing to open the door. "When did you get back?"

Jillian ignored the question and smiled. "I've been spending a lot of time with Con lately."

Judith's eyes lit up instantly. "Really? How is he doing?"

"He's doing great. He's taking coding classes right now. The International Youth Programming Championship is coming up in a few days, and I'm going to take you and Lydia to cheer him on."

Judith beamed with uncontainable joy. "I always knew my boy was going to do amazing things! What's programming? Is it all on the computer? Is it super hard?"

"It's definitely challenging. It requires a lot of logical thinking, but Con is incredibly smart. You don't need to worry about him at all," Jillian chuckled.
