Connor blinked, a complicated thought crossing his mind. He hesitated for a long moment, ultimately swallowing his words and choosing to stay quiet.

The three of them had lunch together at the company. Promptly at three, Killian had his driver take Connor to the coding center. Coincidentally, Instructor Sophia—Jillian—was teaching his class that day.

When the lesson wrapped up, the kids broke into teams for hands-on practice. Jillian walked over to Connor's desk. "Con, you're competing in the Championship, right?"

Connor puffed his chest out with absolute confidence. "Of course I am."

It was the most prestigious international tech event for his age group. The previous iterations had been hosted overseas, but this year it was being held in Metro City. Since Connor was on the host organization's team, he was dead set on winning the trophy on his home turf.

Jillian tilted her head, her tone light and casual. "Since it's such a big deal, how come you haven't invited me to come cheer for you?"

Connor's expression instantly faltered. "It's a team event. I have to ask my instructor if we're even allowed to bring family members. I haven't checked yet."

Jillian didn't press him. She just ruffled his hair affectionately and told him to focus on his practical assignment.

The days flew by, and the Championship officially kicked off. Jillian made sure Judith and Lydia had premium VIP seats right near the stage.

"Mom, Lydia, you guys sit right here. If you need anything at all, just flag down one of the staff members."

Judith grabbed her hand. "Hold on, Jill. Where's Con? I haven't seen him yet."

"The competitors aren't allowed in the arena until the opening ceremony starts. You'll see him in a few minutes."

The two older women tried to contain their excitement, constantly scanning the competitor entrance. Jillian stepped away to the organizers' temporary office and shot Connor a quick text. "The event's about to start. Don't be nervous. Just do your absolute best."

Connor replied instantly. "Don't worry, Mom! I've got this."

Jillian stared at her phone for a long time, a suffocating wave of sadness washing over her.

From beginning to end, Connor had never once asked her to come watch him.
