Connor felt weightless as he bounced over to Killian, proudly holding up the gold medal around his neck. "Dad, look!"
Killian's expression softened in a rare display of warmth. He leaned down and voluntarily hugged his son. "You did great, Connor. I'm proud of you."
"Thanks, Dad."
Out of the corner of her eye, Sylvia noticed that Jillian hadn't left the venue yet and was standing at the judges' panel talking to someone.
An idea formed in her mind. She immediately stepped forward, pinching Connor's cheeks with both hands, and deliberately raised her voice. "Our Connor is so amazing! Your team won first place today! It's a good thing I took the time to tutor you every day; it finally paid off."
Connor obediently replied, "Thank you for your hard work, Sylvia."
Hearing this, the parent of another teammate approached and struck up a warm conversation. "You must be Connor's parents, right? You both look so young and gorgeous, I didn't even dare to recognize you at first."
Sylvia let out a contrived, modest laugh, while Killian merely gave a curt nod, offering neither an explanation nor a correction.
The parent continued praising them. "I'm not just being polite. From a distance earlier, I thought a movie star had arrived. It's no wonder you raised such a smart, outstanding kid like Connor."
"You flatter us," Killian said, his tone detached and cold. "It's all due to the child's own hard work."
"You can't say that! Connor is the core of the team. Without him, we never would have won the championship!" The parent looked completely in awe.
Sylvia smoothly interjected, "You can't say that either. Every child is excellent. It's just that I personally work in algorithm-related fields, so I was able to give him a few extra pointers on the side. He just had a bit of a resource advantage."
The parent looked enlightened, exchanged a few more polite pleasantries, and then left with their child.
After Sylvia finished speaking, she glanced up at Killian. He remained entirely expressionless from start to finish, completely noncommittal to her narrative, looking as though he hadn't been listening at all.
On the other side, Jillian had just finished a group interview with the press. As she squeezed her way out of the crowd, the fragmented gossip of surrounding parents drifted into her ears.
