Connor raised his red, teary eyes, his tone dripping with heavy resentment. "All the places you picked are things she likes. Why even ask me?"
Jillian took a deep breath, explaining with forced patience, "The ice rink is definitely something Stella likes, but the museum isn't. I also checked with the art gallery. You are the only one who likes painting; Stella doesn't like it at all. I took your interests into consideration when I made these plans, didn't I?"
"If you really cared about me, you would send her away."
Jillian's eyes widened, a sudden chill sweeping through her chest.
"Send her where?"
"Send her back to wherever she came from! She was an adopted kid from the orphanage anyway! Her own parents didn't want her, so why do you? It's not like you don't have your own kid!"
Those words completely shattered the last of Jillian's patience. Her chest heaved violently.
"Connor Quincy, I didn't want to lose my temper with you today, but I absolutely must teach you basic human decency and respect right now. Go apologize to Stella this instant."
"No! Why should I?"
"Because you mocked her, and because you told me to send her back. You have to lower your head and admit you were wrong. Didn't your teachers at school teach you how to be a decent human being? I don't demand that you become some great, powerful man in the future, but you must have basic kindness!"
Tears instantly spilled from Connor's eyes. "You never used to talk to me like this! You don't care about me at all anymore! I'm giving you two choices: either you send her back, or I go home right now and never come to your house again."
Standing nearby, Judith was pacing in a panic. "You can't say things like that, Connor. Your mom is just doing this for your own good."
Connor turned his face away, staring fiercely at the corner of the wall, refusing to yield an inch.
Looking at her son's face, a bitter wave of sorrow washed over Jillian.
He was looking more and more like Killian every day. His features, his behavior, even that bone-deep, cold stubbornness—it was all an exact replica.
