Carrying his backpack, he marched silently toward the school building in a fit of rage while Mrs. Zeller and the driver scrambled after him in a panic.
"Connor, don't take your anger out on your own health!"
"Leave me alone!" Connor screamed, his eyes completely bloodshot.
Mrs. Zeller immediately burst into tears on the spot. "My sweet boy, even if your mother doesn't care about you, you can't punish yourself like this. If she doesn't love you, you have to love yourself even more."
Connor broke down sobbing. "Does my mom really not want me anymore? Now that she has another kid, she hates me, doesn't she?"
Mrs. Zeller dropped to one knee in front of Connor, heartbreakingly wiping the rainwater from his face.
"Be a good boy! If your mom won't love you, I will! We have to be strong. We absolutely cannot let outsiders treat us like a joke."
Passing parents and students kept turning their heads. Anyone who didn't know the situation would have thought the child was suffering some unimaginable tragedy.
The driver held the umbrella over both of them, staring at the growing crowd in total disbelief.
It wasn't like Connor had never gone to school in bad weather before. It had always been completely normal.
Why was there suddenly a full-blown soap opera happening at the school gates?
Once emotions settled, Mrs. Zeller wiped her tears away, safely escorted Connor into his classroom, and finally got back in the car to leave.
The second she was home, her demeanor flipped like a switch. She expressionlessly wiped the last bit of moisture from her eyes, dialed a number, and fed Sienna an incredibly exaggerated version of the school gate incident.
Sienna had always despised Mrs. Zeller. But after Jillian left, Sienna realized that no one in the entire household could care for Connor as meticulously as Mrs. Zeller did, so she completely dropped the issue.
Mrs. Zeller had also figured out exactly what Sienna wanted to hear, regularly calling to report on Connor's daily life, which actually smoothed over their relationship quite a bit.
