Daniel turned around, looking mildly surprised to see her, but he gave a polite nod.

Sylvia offered a shy smile, her fingers curling tightly as a wave of nervous energy washed over her.

"Are you here tie shopping too?" she asked softly.

Daniel nodded.

"I was actually just looking to buy a couple of ties as gifts. Would you mind trying this on for me? Just as a free model?" She tilted her head, putting on a forced, playful charm.

"Who are you buying it for? Killian?"

Sylvia stiffened, blurting out instinctively, "My brother, Gibson. And Silas. His birthday is coming up."

As she spoke, she shot a deliberate, sidelong glance at Jillian.

Jillian found the entire display hilarious. She wouldn't give a damn about Silas's birthday, let alone his funeral.

"I don't think I'd be much help," Daniel declined smoothly. "Gibson and I have very different aesthetics, and Silas is much older than I am. It wouldn't be a useful comparison."

Sylvia's awkwardness deepened, but she kept her wide, expectant eyes locked on him, playing the part of the hopeful ingénue perfectly.

She then pivoted to Jillian, acting as though they hadn't been at each other's throats recently, her tone dripping with fake warmth. "Jillian, what brings you out shopping with Daniel today? Don't you need to be home looking after your kid?"

Jillian and Daniel exchanged a brief look.

"He's with family," Jillian replied flatly. She turned her back, clearly signaling the end of the conversation.

Sylvia wanted to keep pushing, but Jillian gave her absolutely zero opening. Daniel offered another polite nod before turning to follow Jillian deeper into the store.

Defeated, Sylvia pulled her gaze away and walked to the register. When she looked up, she realized Killian was standing quietly off to the side, watching her.

She forced a smile. "What is it?"

"Nothing."

"You didn't mention you were buying ties for Gibson and Silas before we got here."

Sylvia's heart skipped a beat. "It was just a spontaneous idea. I really came to buy things for you."

She flashed a delicate smile and handed the tie to the cashier, though Killian stepped up to cover the bill.
