"What's on your mind? You're smiling awfully hard," Killian's voice yanked her back to reality.
Sylvia recovered instantly. "Nothing, just thinking about how it's been ages since we've had a proper dinner date. I'm just happy."
Killian took in every micro-expression on her face but kept his tone casual. "If you wanted to say hi to Daniel, you should just walk up to him next time."
Sylvia's heart skipped a beat, and she immediately went on the defensive. "I didn't! Stop overthinking things. I have absolutely nothing to do with him."
"I'm just saying, we all grew up in the same circles and went to the same university. Saying hello is perfectly normal."
Realizing she had overreacted, Sylvia immediately softened her voice, forcing a self-deprecating laugh. "And here I thought you were actually getting jealous. Guess I was just flattering myself."
Killian didn't press the issue. "Since you're not in a rush to get back to work, I'm putting you on extended leave. Your salary and bonuses will be paid out as usual."
Sylvia finally let out the breath she'd been holding. Clearly, Killian hadn't seen through her.
And the fact that he was giving her unlimited paid time off proved he was trying to compensate her for losing the project. It meant she still held real power over him.
"Alright, then. I think I'll take a solo trip overseas."
"By yourself?"
"Yeah. I can't be clinging to you 24/7. Distance makes the heart grow fonder, right?" Sylvia smiled sweetly.
She had already mapped out her strategy. She would use the trip to create artificial distance.
She firmly believed that men couldn't be suffocated or overly accommodated. They were like kites—you had to yank the string just when they thought they were flying free to keep them hooked.
This trip would serve two purposes: a much-needed vacation, and a calculated move to make Killian panic about losing her.
"Fine by me," Killian agreed.
He dropped her off at her family's estate. Recognizing Killian's car pulling away, Madeline quickly approached her daughter.
"Were you out alone with Killian today?"
Sylvia nodded. "We went shopping and grabbed dinner."
