With their evening plans ruined, Jillian invited Daniel and Mallory back to her place for dinner.
Having guests over made Judith Jarrett and Lydia Lowell incredibly eager. They bustled around the kitchen, preparing a lavish feast.
Judith practically showered Daniel with gratitude. "Thank you so much for today. Thank goodness you were there to save our Jill."
Daniel froze.
The story of Jillian's near-drowning had been relayed by Stella as soon as they walked in the door. Between the child's frantic recounting and Judith's scattered memory, Judith had mistakenly assumed Daniel was the hero.
He opened his mouth to clarify, but Mallory immediately clamped a hand over his wrist beneath the table, giving him a sharp look.
"It's the least he could do!" Mallory chimed in with a bright smile. "Daniel is always looking out for Jillian. You have nothing to worry about, Mrs. Jarrett."
Daniel shot her a helpless glare. Mallory glared right back, her eyes issuing a blatant warning: *Don't ruin this, I'm doing this for your own good.*
Jillian, who was busy putting food on her daughter's plate, caught their silent exchange.
She knew exactly what Mallory was doing—shamelessly trying to push her and Daniel together.
But she and Daniel had only ever been platonic friends, and he had never shown any romantic interest in her. She chalked it up to Mallory's chronic meddling.
Just then, Stella spoke up, her tone dead serious as she corrected the record. "You got it wrong, Grandma! The one who saved Mom wasn't Daniel. It was Connor's dad!"
She laid out the events with perfect clarity. "Connor's dad came to pick him up and saw Mom drowning from a cramp. He jumped straight into the pool and pulled her out."
Judith and Lydia exchanged a complicated glance. Lydia scoffed, her tone dripping with disdain. "Well, look at that. After all these years, he finally learned how to act like a human being."
Jillian couldn't help but stifle a laugh at her great-grandmother's brutal assessment.
