Killian's phone suddenly vibrated. The screen lit up with Sylvia's name.

He swiped to answer, and the girl's overly cheerful voice poured through the speaker.

"Guess what I'm doing right now?"

A faint smirk touched Killian's lips, though his tone was flat. "Having fun."

"You're so boring!" Sylvia whined playfully. "Can't you at least make a wild guess? You have zero romance in you."

"You're on vacation overseas. What else would you be doing besides sightseeing?"

Deflated, Sylvia sighed softly. "Fine, I won't tease you. What about you? What are you up to?"

Killian cast a glance back at the brilliantly lit ballroom teeming with guests. "Attending a function," he replied vaguely.

"Are there a lot of gorgeous women there?"

"Guess," he answered smoothly, giving nothing away.

"I'll be home soon," Sylvia cooed, feigning a hurt tone. "Don't go looking at other women, okay?"

"And if I do?"

Sylvia instantly panicked, pouting and complaining endlessly through the receiver.

Killian listened in silence, not offering a single comforting word. He merely wore a shallow smile before using work as an excuse to hang up.

The moment the call ended, a violent wave of anxiety washed over Sylvia.

She could clearly feel his attitude freezing over again.

The warmth and patience he had shown her recently—fueled purely by his guilt—were entirely gone.

She had assumed that distancing herself and giving him the cold shoulder would make him miss her and cherish her more. Now, she realized how fatally wrong that strategy was.
