Sienna's fingers spasmed around her cup, her eyes snapping up to stare at Mrs. Zeller in utter horror.

Killian's brows drew together, his dark gaze locking onto the older woman.

Completely blind to the lethal shift in the room, Mrs. Zeller mistook their silence for approval. Smugness rolling off her, she kept gloating, "I made up my mind right then to cut off her funds. I wanted to see how long she'd last! She only joined the Quincy family for our wealth anyway, right? There was no way I was letting her get what she wanted!"

Slapping her hands together like a victor seeking a medal, she crowed, "And sure enough, she couldn't take it! In just five years, she was practically a walking corpse, too exhausted to even look after her own child. She looked like she didn't want to live anymore..."

"Enough!"

Sienna screamed the word, the viciousness of her outburst freezing Mrs. Zeller in her tracks.

Even Killian looked mildly surprised.

Realizing her reaction was far too extreme, Sienna pressed a hand to her chest, desperately trying to wrestle her raging emotions back under control. She smoothed her voice into something cold and indifferent. "A family of our standing doesn't need to torture someone over pocket money."

Expecting praise and getting ripped apart instead, Mrs. Zeller flushed a deep, ugly red. She ducked her head awkwardly. "Yes, ma'am. I understand."

Sienna gripped her hands tight, but she couldn't stop the violent tremors wrecking her frame. An agonizing mix of fury and heartbreak tore through her chest.

Catching sight of her deathly pale face, Killian frowned. "What's wrong with you?"

"Nothing." Sienna covered her face, fighting back the hot tears threatening to spill, terrified she would completely break down in front of them. "I'm leaving."

Unable to endure another second in that house, she grabbed her purse and practically fled from The Yale Residences.

The moment the door clicked shut, Mrs. Zeller let out a huge breath, muttering under her breath, "What's wrong with her today? It's not like I said anything wrong."

In the center of the living room, Killian stood with his hands shoved in his pockets, his jaw locked tight. His expression was dangerously unreadable.

He paced a few tight steps before stopping. When he spoke, the temperature in the room plummeted. "What you just said. Was it true?"
