Jillian gritted her teeth, nodded silently, and grabbed her bag before turning to leave the office.
Not long after, Killian received a call from Gibson.
"Did you and Sylvia break up?" Gibson's voice was full of shock, clearly completely unaware of the situation.
"Yes," Killian replied, his tone flat and emotionless. "I assumed she would have told you."
"She's been locking herself in her room these past few days, drinking constantly, refusing to eat, and refusing to step outside," Gibson said, a hint of helplessness in his voice. "I just thought you two had a fight, so I didn't ask too many questions."
"When she came back recently, she surprised me with a proposal, and I turned her down," Killian stated calmly. "Since I have no intention of getting married, there's no need to string her along."
Hearing this, Gibson scoffed coldly. "Then what about all the feelings and the youth she wasted on you these past few years?"
A brief silence fell over the line before Killian's icy, detached voice cut through. "Dating always comes with the possibility of breaking up. I never promised her marriage."
"Killian!" Gibson slammed his fist hard onto his desk, his tone brimming with anger. "How can you be so cold and selfish? Do you even have a heart?"
Killian pressed his lips together, his expression devoid of any emotion.
Cold, selfish, ruthless, heartless... he had heard those words so many times growing up that he had long grown numb to them. People had labeled him as cold-blooded since he was young, and over time, he simply lived up to their expectations, never caring about what others thought of him.
"Gibson, you've known me for a long time."
With those parting words, Killian hung up the phone.
Gibson was left so furious he let out a bitter laugh.
Right. He had always known Killian's temperament and had heard all the negative rumors about him.
But he had held onto a shred of hope, thinking Killian would treat Sylvia differently, that he would be someone who valued loyalty and knew how to take responsibility.
