Spending so much time with Killian had made her greedy. She had started treating him as her personal property, breeding an intense possessiveness. Yet she had completely forgotten that he was someone she had stolen from another woman in the first place.

A suffocating wave of despair washed over her. Choked up, Sylvia burst into loud, agonizing sobs. "How did it end up like this..."

Gibson looked at his weeping sister and let out a helpless sigh. "You never should have listened to mom."

He had always been confused. His sister and Killian had known each other since childhood, fully aware of each other's flaws, and had been just friends for years. How had she suddenly fallen so deeply in love with him?

It didn't take much thought to realize that their mother, Madeline, had been pushing her from behind the scenes every step of the way.

He had noticed long ago that their mother wanted to use his sister to latch onto the Quincy family and satisfy her own vanity.

But back then, he had harbored a bit of foolish optimism. He hadn't tried hard enough to stop it, silently accepting this unequal dynamic, which had led directly to the current mess.

"I'm taking you home."

Gibson drove Sylvia back to the Xavier residence.

In the living room, Madeline stood with a cold expression, her eyes brimming with disappointment.

Sylvia had been hiding the news of the breakup for days. It wasn't until Gibson had called the house earlier that Madeline found out—and she also learned that Sylvia had made a drunken fool of herself at Quincy Tech, losing every ounce of her dignity.

Seeing his mother about to launch into a tirade, Gibson cut in first. "Sylvia is in a terrible state. I'm taking her up to her room to rest."

Madeline swallowed the words on the tip of her tongue. Seeing her son so obviously protecting his sister, she finally stepped aside to let them pass.

Gibson settled Sylvia into her upstairs bedroom, closed the door, and headed back down.

Madeline sat on the sofa, her chest heaving violently as she failed to suppress her rage. "She can't do anything right! Wasting all these years and she still couldn't tie Killian down. She gets dumped so effortlessly and then runs to his company to embarrass herself!"
