"Connor ranked first in his class this time," Jillian chimed in. "He's amazing."

"Then you've got it made. One son, one daughter. Brains and charm."

"The kids work hard on their own. I haven't done much," Jillian laughed, waving a hand.

Listening from the side, Connor felt increasingly miserable.

He couldn't understand why Daniel was so chummy with his mom, or why even Stella seemed to adore him.

There was absolutely no awkwardness between them.

A creeping sense of unease settled in his chest. If this Mr. Langley was getting so close to his mom, what was going to happen to his dad?

For the entire meal, Connor remained utterly sullen.

After lunch, Jillian planned to take the two kids to the children's play area in the mall.

Daniel didn't leave, naturally offering, "I'll go with you. Taking care of two kids by yourself is too tiring."

Jillian looked slightly embarrassed. "Are you sure I'm not taking up your time?"

"Not at all," Daniel's tone was warm. "I have nothing else going on this weekend anyway."

Once they arrived at the mall, Connor made a beeline for his favorite arcade section to play games by himself. Stella went to her usual arts and crafts classroom to make things with the instructor.

With both kids settled, Daniel accompanied Jillian to a nearby seating area.

A while later, Connor got tired of playing games and went looking for Jillian.

He found Daniel teaching his mom how to play a new game.

Jillian obviously hadn't played it before and was fumbling slightly.

Daniel simply guided her hands over the controls.

Looking at his mother's smiling face, Connor's heart sank even further.

As evening approached, Connor suddenly asked to go home.

Jillian was a bit surprised, as she had assumed he would stay at her place for the full two days.

"I have extra tutoring classes tomorrow," Connor said.

Jillian didn't think much of it. Connor really did have a lot of extracurriculars. Killian was highly dedicated and strategic when it came to his son's education.
