Killian hadn't objected on the phone, simply agreeing to the location.
Jillian arrived under the overpass early.
The evening breeze swept over the water. The area was so desolate she could clearly hear the rushing current.
Not long after, the crisp sound of footsteps echoed through the hollow underpass.
Jillian instinctively turned around and spotted four or five burly men casually strolling her way.
Figuring they were just locals out for some night fishing, she brushed it off and looked away.
A few minutes later, Killian's tall figure emerged from the fading dusk ahead.
Jillian immediately stepped forward, her heels clicking rapidly on the concrete as she approached him.
"What do you want?" Killian asked. His voice was freezing, completely devoid of emotion.
She took a deep breath to steady her nerves and cut straight to the point. "I want to know what possible reason you have for trying to take custody of Stella."
He stared down at her with dead eyes. "The child was adopted under my name. Naturally, half of the custody belongs to me."
"But she hasn't lived with you for a single day!" Jillian snapped, unable to hold back her fury. "Since the day she was adopted, she's only ever lived with me. Be honest with yourself—do you even feel a sliver of fatherly affection toward her?"
Killian just stared at her for a few agonizing seconds, his gaze like a block of ice. Finally, he turned his attention to the dark ripples on the river, his tone entirely detached. "If you have a problem, talk to my lawyer."
Her chest heaved. She balled her hands into tight fists, fighting the urge to scream.
She had to keep telling herself not to do anything reckless.
Mr. Chambers had already assured her his chances of winning custody were practically zero. There was no need to go to war with him right here.
"If that's how it's going to be, then we have nothing left to discuss."
She spun on her heel to walk away.
Suddenly, he raised a hand, holding out a stack of documents.
