Jillian shuffled the papers into a neat stack and shoved them into her purse. Ignoring his departure, she turned to head the opposite way.
It was only then that she realized how suffocatingly dark it was under the bridge. With the rushing water drowning out everything else, a sudden wave of panic washed over her, and she broke into a fast walk.
Hearing the rapid crunch of footsteps behind her, she whipped her head around—only for a massive hand to clamp down on her throat. Duct tape was slapped violently over her mouth, and a heavy black hood was yanked down over her head.
She thrashed and kicked wildly, but the thugs easily hoisted her up and chucked her into the back of a waiting van.
Cloaked in darkness, the van sped along the riverbank before vanishing into the night.
At that exact moment, on the elevated highway running parallel to the river, a sleek black sedan cruised directly alongside them.
Soon, the van swerved up the exit ramp, merging onto the main road and speeding toward the outskirts of the city.
Trapped inside the dark sack, Jillian opened her eyes. She stopped fighting, forcing herself to conserve energy while straining to listen to the outside world. The distant hum of city traffic faded completely, telling her they were likely heading deep into the suburbs.
This side of Metro City was filled with abandoned farms and derelict factories.
The roads grew bumpier and utterly deserted. Not a single passing headlight in sight.
The van driver glanced in his rearview mirror and nudged the burly man in the passenger seat. "Boss, check it out."
The boss peered into the side mirror, spotting the headlights of a luxury black sedan tailing them relentlessly.
He let out a derisive click of his tongue. "A luxury sedan. Some rich bastard. You think a guy with that kind of cash is going to risk his neck for a chick?"
The driver agreed it was highly unlikely and brushed it off.
They approached an intersection just as the light turned red.
The driver hesitated, debating whether to run it. Before he could decide, the luxury sedan behind them hit the gas and violently rammed straight into their rear bumper.
The white van lurched forward with a sickening crunch, the entire trunk caving in.
"What the hell was that?!" the thugs in the back yelled, tumbling over each other.
"Boss, what do we do?"
Before the driver could even finish his sentence, the sedan reversed—and then violently slammed into them a second time.
"Motherfucker!"
