She just never expected Killian to have them custom-made.

She had always thought he held no expectations for their children.

Even the affection he now showed Connor seemed to have only slowly developed over a long period of living together.

"You certainly forgive yourself easily enough, but what about this child?" he asked.

Jillian's eyes immediately reddened.

She refused to cry in front of him. Turning her head to look out the window, she pressed her lips into a tight line.

"What do you mean?" she asked, her expression entirely blank once she had reined in her emotions.

"Under normal circumstances, the odds of conceiving twins are extremely low. There are no twin genetics in your family or the Quincys, so how exactly did you end up pregnant with a boy and a girl?"

She opened her mouth to explain.

But he made a silencing gesture and continued, "The doctors said your constitution was incredibly weak, making it almost impossible for your body to handle the toll of carrying twins. In the early stages, your hormones were a mess. They suspected you had been taking hormonal drugs for a long time before you conceived."

"And so?" she asked, her eyes bloodshot, her jaw clenched.

He didn't continue right away. Instead, he stared at her with a chilling, predatory gaze, as if trying to bore a hole straight through her soul to see what kind of monster hid inside.

"So you suspect I took fertility pills just to have twins, because you thought one baby wouldn't be enough leverage to force you into marriage? And because of that selfish stunt, it cost one of our children their life? You think I'm some scheming monster who climbed the ranks over her own baby's dead body!"

Her chest heaved violently.

Back when she was pregnant, he hadn't cared about a single prenatal checkup, let alone accompanied her to one.

She had thought he simply didn't care, completely unaware that he had been investigating her so thoroughly behind her back.

"I can overlook all of that," Killian said, waving a hand with utter indifference.

"But you killed your own child because of your selfish ambitions. What gives you the right to forgive yourself so easily? You want to walk away and start a shiny new life? You don't deserve it."
