They talked the whole way, not noticing a car passing by them.
After a while, they arrived at the entrance of her residential community.
Daniel stopped first. "Alright, go on in."
Jillian nodded but didn't move. She stood quietly in place, her hands tucked into her coat pockets.
Daniel turned back, got into his car, waved at her, and drove off.
Jillian watched the vehicle completely disappear into the night before turning to head inside.
At that exact moment, two blinding high beams suddenly flicked on. The light locked straight onto her figure, piercing through the darkness like two sharp blades catching her entirely off guard.
Jillian's heart skipped a beat. It instantly reminded her of the day Killian had used this exact same blinding light to suppress that group of thugs.
She instinctively raised a hand to shield her eyes from the glare, furrowing her brows as she looked across the way.
The driver's side door pushed open, and Killian stepped out slowly. He watched her in silence, the headlights still blazing bright enough to blind.
A surge of anger instantly rushed to Jillian's chest. She hated this suffocating sense of oppression, as if she were a criminal being publicly judged.
Killian had originally used this tactic to deal with criminals, and she never expected him to use it against her.
What exactly did he think of her? Did he see her in the same light as those thugs?
"Mr. Quincy," Jillian said, her tone freezing. "Please turn off the lights. I don't like this."
Killian didn't move. He waited a moment, and just as Jillian's patience was about to run out, he finally reached into the car and switched off the high beams.
The sudden drop in lighting was drastic. Jillian closed her eyes, taking several seconds to adjust to the darkness again.
"What are you feeling guilty about, being scared of a headlight?" Killian said mildly.
"I have nothing to be guilty about. Please speak clearly, Mr. Quincy."
Killian didn't answer. His somber gaze landed in the direction Daniel had just left.
