"True," Killian said mildly.
Jillian took a deep breath, turning her head away as a self-deprecating smile touched her lips.
Just as she thought—that was exactly how he saw it.
"If you had realized your place sooner, we wouldn't have dragged this out for so long," Killian said, stepping toward her.
Jillian didn't move.
She could hear a slight softening in his tone. She figured that by lowering her defenses voluntarily, it might convince him to stop badgering her.
Stopping in front of her, Killian raised a hand and rested it gently on top of her head.
It was a gesture hard to describe—part mockery, part charity, yet holding an inexplicably intimate tension.
Jillian's mind was in turmoil. She had no idea what he was trying to do, so she just kept speaking.
"Everyone makes mistakes. I admit my issues impacted your life, and it's completely justified for you to hate and resent me."
She looked up at him. "But Connor is still young. If we can't be husband and wife, can we at least be strangers?"
Killian stared intently into her eyes, still giving no indication of his stance.
Jillian pressed on. "Stella is just an ordinary girl I adopted. She has absolutely no biological ties to me or Daniel. She and Connor are about the same age, just months apart. Do you honestly think I could give birth to two children back-to-back within a few months?"
"You know that's impossible. People say we look alike, but that's just a coincidence. It's common for two unrelated people to start looking alike after spending a lot of time together. I never hid anything or deceived you during our marriage."
Deep down, Killian agreed with everything Jillian was saying.
He knew there was nothing suspicious about Stella's identity.
Stella didn't look anything like Daniel, either.
It was just that Daniel was the only man she frequently interacted with, so he couldn't help but direct his suspicions toward him.
"Then there's one thing you never considered," Killian said. "I'm not fighting for Stella's custody to get back at you."
Jillian froze, looking up at him. "What?"
Keeping his eyes locked on hers, Killian enunciated every word. "I never considered divorce."
