Killian's face completely darkened, his gaze turning icy.
Jillian nominally apologized, but her words remained razor-sharp. "Sorry, I forgot this was a team led by your girlfriend. I stand by what I said. Without professional competence, she'd be better off staying home and playing the pampered heiress. My team does not harbor a waste of space."
The moment the words left her mouth, Sylvia pushed the door open and walked in.
As soon as she saw Killian, her eyes grew red. She looked aggrieved and indignant as she complained, "Killian, I just got the notice. My name isn't on the new management roster. I've been the head of SwiftPath for so long. Why am I the first one to get the boot?"
Killian looked at her. "Jillian is the Project Lead now. If you stay, you'll be working under her. Can you accept that?"
Sylvia was instantly stumped.
She truly couldn't stomach bowing down to Jillian, but being publicly ousted was a massive blow to her ego. "I don't have to be on the management team, but I can't just be deliberately sidelined. SwiftPath represents years of my blood, sweat, and tears."
"Blood, sweat, and tears?" Moving swiftly, Jillian snatched The SwiftPath Audit from next to Killian's hand and slapped it firmly down in front of Sylvia.
"Then explain these accounts."
"A dinner gala, a haute couture gown costing hundreds of thousands of dollars, expensed to the company. A seventeen-day overseas business trip where luxury goods, tobacco, alcohol, jewelry, and designer bags—all personal expenses—were mixed right into the corporate ledger."
Sylvia bit her lip. She knew she was in the wrong, but showed absolutely no remorse. Instead, she lifted her chin provocatively. "Mr. Quincy approved it. Is it any of your business? These are SwiftPath's books, it's not like I spent your money. My expenses didn't need to be itemized; they were approved straight through. Ms. Jarrett, have you never experienced that kind of privilege? Or are you just jealous?"
"I don't envy a fool," Jillian replied calmly.
Sylvia's chest heaved. "Who are you calling a fool?"
Jillian couldn't be bothered with her, looking solely at Killian. "For the sake of the project's risk management, I have ample reason to remove her from the core executive team."
"You don't have the authority!" Sylvia shot back immediately.
"Shut up." Jillian shut her down instantly. "You should consider yourself lucky you were at SwiftPath. If you were on my team, I would have charged you with corporate embezzlement a long time ago."
Sylvia was thoroughly enraged. Grabbing the pen holder off the desk, she hurled it straight at Jillian.
Jillian raised her arm to block it. It missed her face but struck her palm, sending a sharp sting through her hand.
