"The food here is amazing, I promise. You just have to try it."
"I don't care how good the food is. It doesn't change the fact that there's a really scary person living here!"
"Who?" Connor asked, feigning ignorance.
Stella was about to blurt out the answer when she caught Killian walking past them. She clamped her mouth shut instantly, terrified into silence.
Only when he was a safe distance away did she point at his retreating back, whispering fiercely, "Your dad!"
"My dad is great."
"To you, maybe! Everyone else is terrified of him. I honestly think the reason he never talks or smiles is because he eats a kid for every meal!" Stella mumbled under her breath.
Killian poured himself a glass of water and said smoothly, "I can hear you."
Stella stuck her tongue out in panic and quickly sealed her lips.
Despite her fears, Connor's relentless pleading ultimately won out, and Stella stayed for dinner.
With extra guests in the house, the kitchen staff had prepared an absolute feast. After washing their hands, the kids returned to the dining room to find Killian already seated at the head of the table.
Stella timidly hid behind Connor, sliding into her chair as quietly as possible. She kept her head down, picking at her plate while sneaking nervous glances at Killian, looking utterly petrified.
Killian's cool gaze swept over her. "I don't eat children. You can stop staring at me."
Sitting across from them, Jillian couldn't hold back a laugh, her shoulders shaking with amusement.
"What's so funny, Mom?" Connor asked, thoroughly confused.
Jillian shook her head, still grinning, but offered no explanation.
Killian looked up at her, a complicated emotion swirling in his dark eyes, though he kept silent.
A moment later, he set down his fork, patiently peeled a handful of shrimp, placed them onto a small plate, and slid it toward his son.
