Hearing her grandmother and mother talk like that made it sound as though Killian had mistreated her.

In truth, while Killian was undeniably aloof, he wasn't the type to deprive anyone of basic comforts like food and shelter.

Afraid of stirring up more tension, Jillian quickly changed the subject. "Daniel, thank you for going out of your way to drive Judith and Lydia here."

Daniel offered a warm smile. "It was nothing, don't mention it. Are all your admission tests sorted out?"

"There are still two left for this afternoon," Jillian replied.

Daniel took the order forms from the doctor, scanning them before a slight frown creased his forehead.

They were standard admission procedures, nothing complicated, but they required crossing the garden from the inpatient ward to the outpatient building, navigating elevators, and covering quite a distance.

For someone young, it wouldn't matter, but having two elderly women accompany her back and forth would be far too taxing.

"I'll go with you for those tests this afternoon," Daniel offered proactively.

Jillian was just about to thank him when a harsh voice suddenly cut in.

"That won't be necessary."

Killian stepped forward, his tone domineering and leaving no room for argument. "There's no need for an outsider to worry about her afternoon appointments."

Daniel looked slightly taken aback, raising his eyes to meet Killian's gaze. "You?"

Killian offered no further explanation. He simply turned and headed for the door, leaving behind one indisputable fact: "If there's any need for a family member to sign or authorize anything, I am her legally wedded husband."

With those words, he casually pulled the hospital room door shut behind him, completely shutting out everyone's stares.

Daniel's brow furrowed deeper, a flicker of displeasure passing through his eyes.

Jillian quickly tried to smooth things over. "Daniel, you really don't have to trouble yourself. It's just two minor tests. It'll be over soon."

The afternoon tests went flawlessly, with all results coming back perfectly normal.

As evening approached, the doctor ordered her to fast from food and water in preparation for the next day's surgery.

After school, both Connor and Stella Jarrett were brought to the hospital. Having the two kids chattering away made the agonizing pre-op wait feel much lighter.
